Aberlour a'bunadh how much to dilute?

What do you recommend is an acceptable amount of water to use to dilute 1oz of Aberlour a'bunadh?

At 60% alcohol I am going to have to add some water to this.

I want to know how much water I can add to reduce the alcohol burn which will dull my taste buds on my tongue and yet not enough to reduce all the flavours.

For each 1oz is a tablespoon, or two teaspoons of water acceptable?

I would usually fill my glass with one part Abunadh 4 parts air.......

I think you're on the right track, but for just 1 oz, I'd start with one teaspoon and see what you think. If it's still too hot, then have a go at another teaspoon...

I once got a bit geeky and lined up 3 glasses with 3 differing amounts of water in each glass. It gave me time to compare them side by side. And yes, it was with the Abunadh...

I don't know that there's an "unacceptable" amount of water, if you find the result to your liking...

I agree with the general consensus that the a'bunadh is actually fine neat. It doesn't really need water, although if 60% ABV is too hot for your palate, then by all means add a few drops to bring the heat down to something you are comfortable with.

However, I really stress the word "drops". Don't flood the whisky. Just try a few drops, then taste. Add a few more drops, then taste again. Keep adding in very small quantities....it's a very fine line between being potent and then suddenly being flooded and too weak to enjoy.

Bear in mind that as the a'bunadh is not chill-filtered, adding a few drops of water may only cause the oils to separate and sit on the surface. You'll therefore need to give your dram a good swirl to make sure the spirit, the water, and the oils all re-combine well.

Yes, you yourself are the only person who can answer this question. And you may find the formula is a fluid one (pun entirely intended), as your tastes change and you become more accustomed to higher levels of alcohol. I found it necessary to water 40% drams when I started out; now I like such as a'bunadh as is.

^ If there is one whisky that could survive an icecube, that's the a'bunadh.. You drink it as you like it, period 8)
A few drops of water are always nice imho, it takes away the "burning" sensation of the 60s on the lips.
I really like a'bunadh as well, it's a perfect "wrapper" at the end of the day. You know how it will taste like, slight variations from batch to batch but no bad surprises.. Not too complex either, simple and efficient :)

There are 6 teaspoons per ounce.

If you add 1 teaspoon of water, that makes about 51%
If you add 2 teaspoon of water, that makes about 45%
If you add 3 teaspoon of water, that makes about 40%

But if you say add 1 tsp and take a sip, then add another tsp, that will be less that 45% depends on how may tsp in a sip which varies from person to person. :roll:

"Acceptable" is a term that's impossible to define as it'll be different for everyone. Personally I cut it by 1/4th as that drops the ABV down to about 40% which I find much more palatable than the 60% bottle strength. Other's may cut it more or less, it's all about what tastes best to you.
