Maturation a la casa

The same person that makes the 30 l casks for Mackmyra Whisk(e)y here in Sweden also makes 3 l casks lightly toasted on the inside. The cost is 900 SEK i.e. 100 EUR. I was thinking on buying one and finish some cheap single malts in sherry, fino, oloroso or PX. The malts I am having in mind is Macleods Islay 8 y.o. (Lagavulin?) with PX, Macleods Lowland 8 y.o. (Auchentochan) with oloroso and/or Grants 5 y.o. in fino. Now my questions to you members on the forum.

Has anybody here done it and what was the result?

Wow interesting, nice opportunity. I assume they are new casks, making me think the actual amount of time in the cask isn't too long since it's actually a finish you'll be doing. I have no experience doing this at all, but am curious to hear about the outcome.

Yes, the casks are new and you could even decide the toasting, lightly, medium or well done.

Robocod, how do you propose to do a finish? Are you going to season the cask with sherry or whatever first? Seems kind of risky to me.

MrTattieHeid, I imagine that sherry in the cask for 3-4 months should be enough, pour it out and whisky in.
As for risk, financial riskwise yes.
Whiskywise maybe, it could make poor whisky (Glen Grant 5y.o.) better than poor.

If you put pixie dust and holy water in the cask for 3-4 months beforehand you may have a chance of making it drinkable... :wink:
