Best islay young cask strenght

Postby Lugarteniente » Mon Nov 28, 2005 2:02 am

If have tasted only two malts of islay: Lagavulin 16 and Arbeg TEN. The two are very nice, but I prefer the Laga by long.

I am considering to jump to the CS level (All people here prefers the CS versions). Help me to decide my next taste.

My preference now is Laphroaig, because it´s cheaper and I haven´t tasted any laphroaig but, what´s the best in your opinion?

I love the Uigeadail, but I also far prefer Ardbeg 10 to Lagavulin 16. I suspect that you would probably like the Lag 12 better.

On the other hand, the sherry sweetness and depth in Uigeadail might just be what is missing in Ardbeg for you.

Therefore, you should buy the Laphroaig. :? Well, especially since you haven't had any Laphroaig yet.

I like the Lag and Ardbeg about the same and a lot more than the Laphroaig but you must try Laphroaig if you haven't - a look at your poll on the best 10yo OB, will explain why :)

Since you liked the Lagavulin 16 more than the Ardbeg 10 you may prefer the Lagavulin 12YO.

Personally I would go for the Laphroaig 10YO Cask Strength.

Regardless, in my opinion this is a no lose situation :D .

The Laphroaig 10yo CS is very good and I prefer it to the standard 10yo.

But there are other CS Islay's besides the three you mention.
Caol Ila CS - NAS
Bowmore CS - NAS
Both are young pungent Islays

Even more pungent and young is the Ardbeg Very Young (CS)
Or the young peaty Bunnahabhain Móine 7yo, but may not be easy to find anymore.

And there are a number of young independent bottlings. One example would be the Royal Mile Whiskies "Young peaty one" which is a 6yo (or young) Bowmore at CS.

I voted for one of the above but in reality you should get all three plus CS Caol Ila, CS Bruichladdich and probably CS Bowmore and CS Bunnahabhain too (oh, and don't forget Port Ellen). Can't really go wrong with either CS or Islay and both is just a treat to really enjoy the full strength of whisky from the isle.

Lagavulin 12 better than Laphroaig 10 CS?

Bah! You're all wrong! :x

(Translation: I respectfully disagree.)

Another raised hand here for Laphroaig 10 CS, although the Ardbeg Uigeadail was a very, very close 2nd.

cask strength debate

Postby Di Blasi » Tue Nov 29, 2005 2:44 am

I was quite impressed with the Lagauvlin 12yo cask strength when I tasted it. The immdiate spice when passing the lips, and the tangerine hints are just a few comments of why I think it's so good. But I must stay true to Ardbeg, cause it's Uigeadail that truly impresses even further. Not only because of it's "easy drinking" 54,2% quality, but for it's perfectly balanced sweetness and classic Ardbeg characteristics! Although the Laphroaig 10yo cask strength is also very good, I'd rank it 3rd, after the the Lagavulin 12yo.

I voted the Laphroaig 10 CS.

My heart went with the Lagavulin 12, but then my tastebuds overuled.
