Good Scotch with both peated and unpeated expressions?

Postby slobak » Mon Jul 14, 2014 12:58 pm

I'm trying to put together a tasting clinic for new whisky drinkers and wanted to showcase the way that peat influences the flavor of whisky. Ideally, I'd like to find a decent pair of single malt whiskies by the same distillery that differ only in that one is peated and the other is unpeated, so in a side-by-side you can taste the difference.

Of course there are going to be lots of other subtleties involved so no comparison is perfect, but I'd like to control for the big differences, i.e. distillery, age, and barrel type.

The Caol Ila 12 yr unpeated (vs their standard peated) would be great but it seems gone / too expensive at this point.

Any suggestions? Thanks!
