I tried this a few nights ago. Wow, what a malt!

If you'd told me any whisky this young could taste so good, I would not have believed you!

It's the heavily peated expression, bottled at around 60%, and just bursting with smoke, peat, and FLAVOUR! Despite its youth, there's a depth of flavour behind the outrageous peat.

I'm comfortable scoring this somewhere in between 8.0 and 8.4, which equates to a sensational whisky by my scale! (I think I've only ever scored one whisky in the nines before).

Anyone else tried it?

I read a review of it on Whiskyfun.com by Serge (one of the Malt maniacs) and he seems to have felt the same way, Looks like they got away from the dumpy, curved bottles. We probably won't get it around these parts, but it's fairly new so maybe down the road. Sounds like a powerful malt. The only Jura I've seen at C/S is a 10 yo Cadenheads bottled in 1995. Would you compare it to any Islays?

Hi Admiral,

Bought this when thewhiskyexchange, first advertised it a while back. Massively peated and different to any other whisky but a bit too expensive for what you get (IMHO). Burnt sticks and bicycle inner tubes ?

I would probably score it around the same as you but I am a much more generous marker :)

I had a dram of the 5yr CS RMW bottling last year - nuclear powered stuff. As Admiral said, it's very impressive how mature it is. Although it was a bit too much peat for my liking, the quality was obvious.

Bought a bottle of RMW's bottling of Jura 5yo last year. Smashing stuff. Easily the best Jura I've ever had - sadly the bottle evaporated fairly quickly.

I haven't tasted the OB 5yo yet - it retails @85-95 EUR around here :shock: ! But I understand that some heavily peated Jura is part of the vatting of the Isle of Jura "Superstition" - and that's a fabulous whisky IMHO.

Admiral, didnt you think the liquerice was way too overpowering?
I had a 20 cl sample of this to use in my most peated experiment. When tasted blind this was the one you could get each time correct.
For its age I thinks it was ok, but overall way too young, massive young oak (yet not bitter) and tons of liquerice in the finish. The peat IMHO was sharp and although thorougly present, still overshadowed by the young oak and almost overpowering alcohol.
The price is balancing at the edge of ridiculous for that age.
However, a friend of mine who sampled it once was really fond of it. He usually likes oily, soft and delicate drams, so I was quite suprised when he said he really likes this.
Its a good addition to the range, but they should really turn down the price in a drastic manner. i'd take a superstition over this any time.

In the smallest of small print on the label, it reads, "Exclusively selected and bottled for http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com"

It has a plain, small white label with purple printing. Distilled 18th January 1999, Bottled 20th August 2004, from Cask No 19.

I cannot deny that the price is absolutely outrageous. It's only available from a specialist importer here in Oz, and he's selling it for $170, which is utterly ridiculous for a 5 year old.

However, since I won the bottle in a tasting competition, I can't complain now, can I? :wink:

Would you compare it to any Islays?

Well, the peating makes it comparable to the most peatiest of Ardbegs or Laphroaigs, but it stands head and shoulders over, say, Ardbeg Very Young, which is still too youthful IMHO.

No, not really. There's certainly a decent hit of licorice, but I felt it sat nicely with the other flavour components.
