Ranger Creek Rimfire is a completely new and different product from the company's first release: Ranger Creek .36 Texas Bourbon Whiskey. Rimfire is a scotch-style whiskey (although Ranger Creek can't call it a scotch since it's not made in Scotland). It is a lightly smoked whiskey similar to Caol Ila. Smoked whiskeys were popularized through products like Laphroaig, Lagavulin, and Ardbeg from the Islay region of Scotland. Rimfire is their less intense Texas cousin. Those scotches have a strong presence of peat smoke, which imparts an earthy, phenolic, medicinal smokiness. Instead of using Scottish peat, Ranger Creek hand smokes their malt with Texas mesquite. The mesquite is sourced from a local farmer to whom the brewstillery donates their spent grain, then placed in a 20 foot shipping container that has been converted into a huge Texas smoker. The mesquite smoke imparts a profile unique to Texas. The result is a smooth, sweet, sipping single malt with just a touch of smoke.
Rimfire is more than just a lightly smoked single malt whiskey. It's a product that showcases what Ranger Creek can do as a "brewstillery" that makes both beer and bourbon. As whiskey makers will tell you, whiskey is simply distilled beer. Ranger Creek Rimfire is an illustration of this. The brewstillery makes a beer called Mesquite Smoked Porter, and they wondered what it would taste like distilled into a whiskey. So they distilled it, called it Rimfire, and released it as their second Small Caliber Series product.
Ranger Creek's Small Caliber Series is a line of creative, limited edition whiskeys aged in small barrels. These whiskeys are sold in small 375 ml bottles to represent the small barrels in which they were matured. Each bottle is hand labeled with the batch number, bottle number, season, and maturation time. Limited production of these unique, innovative whiskeys makes them special collector's item products. The company plans to release a new Small Caliber Series product each year. Their first release was Ranger Creek .36 Texas Bourbon Whiskey in November, 2011. Ranger Creek Rimfire is their second. A third Small Caliber Series product is currently under development for release in 2013.
RImfire takes its name from the type of ammunition used by the WInchester 1866 "Yellow Boy" repeating rifle. This famous rifle can be seen in use throughout Lonesome Dove and many other westerns. It was used by many frontier Texans and is proudly on display in the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame.
Ranger Creek Rimfire will be available in October, 2012. Only 500 cases will be available.
About Ranger Creek
Ranger Creek Brewing & Distilling is a combined brewery/distillery handcrafting beer and bourbon in San Antonio, TX one batch at a time. They are the only microbrewery in San Antonio, one of a few combined brewery/distilleries in the U.S., and one of the only combined operations making both beer and bourbon. They focus on interesting recipes and use local ingredients from the state of Texas as much as possible. The company uses much of the same equipment to make both beer and bourbon, which is possible because in order to make bourbon, beer must be made first. They encourage visitors to San Antonio to sign up for one of their regularly scheduled tours and come by for a visit.
