Similar peat level to black label and HP 12.

Postby Eric in ABQ » Mon Aug 02, 2010 2:29 am

Hello.

I really like the level of peat found in JW Black label and Highland Park 12 and was wondering what other selections might have similar levels of peat. I've tried most of the Islays and find that I like a more mid-range peat level.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Ok I know this is ramping up the price factor a bit but I'm going for Talisker 18.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I should have mentioned Talisker 18 has been a long time favorite. However, it has disappeared from the shelves here and seems to not be coming back. And, the T-10 has jumped up to $70, which is a bit high for what you get, in my opinion. I get my Talisker fix via JW Green Label now.

I do see some of the other suggestions around, so I will certainly try to give some of them a shot.

Thanks again.

Glen Garioch 15YO displays a rooty, subtle smokiness that is quite distinctive, while the 21YO is beautifully rounded with a rather delicate, heathery smokiness and a lingering sweetness.

Older releases of Bunnahabhain 12YO also possess a lightly smoky quality, and represent a good option for anyone not drawn to the heavier Islay hitters.

Good suggestions...I'd also recommend the regular Bruichladdich expressions (not Octomore, Port Charlotte, or any of the finishes), since they're much less peated than Ardbeg, Laphroaig, etc. I'd also recommend Ardmore as an example of a peated Highland malt...
