Japanese Whisky
Japanese Whisky
Hi,
I'm going to Japan shortly and would like to pick up a nice (local) single malt whilst I'm there. Can anyone reccommend the definitive Japanese single malt that I should buy?
Thanks.

Re: Japanese Whisky
Japanese whisky is among my favorites. Suntory Hibiki and Yamazaki are good, best aged over 12 years.

Re: Japanese Whisky
If you're in Tokyo, there are some great whisky bars and whisky shops that sell lovely bottlings from the 90s and early 2000s that are just phenomenal. If I were you I would buy maybe a bottle of Yoichi 21yo and spend the rest of your cash on Scottish whisky. While over there, I had a chance to try some very cool stuff like:
1974 CC Ardbeg
Yamazaki 25yo
Duncan Taylor Bowmore (1960s vintage)
Samaroli Highland Park 1988
Samaroli 1978 Ardmore
It's a veritable gold mine of old valuable bottles from Scotland.

Have any specific whisky bar recommendations for Kyoto?

Re: Japanese Whisky
I've personally never been to Japan, so can't give personal recommendations.
Maybe look in the Directory on the top of this website and go to" Whisky Bars of the World". I would assume this is similar to the booklet that comes out every year with the July WM subscription, but seeing as there are no whisky bars up here, I don't really peruse it to hard.
There may be information there on Kyoto bars to frequent, but I'm not sure how the contenders are selected by WM. It may just be a list of advertisers.
Here's a link for you to peruse that may, or may not, be of some use:

Nikka Black (blended malt) and Nikka Whisky From The Barrel (blended) are two of my favourites.

Re: Japanese Whisky
i bought a bottle of Hibiki 12yrs on the weekend. opened it up with a mate and i was seriously impressed! i felt it had just a slight to much woody flavour to it. But i thoroughly enjoyed every drop!
Re: Japanese Whisky
The best whiskey in the world isn't from Scotland, England, or Ireland. It isn't Canadian or American. It is, rather, from Japan.

I recently picked up a bottle of Yamazaki 12 yr. Was that a mistake? Should I go out of my way to grab one of the hibiki whiskys?
