Most underrated single malt?
Re: Most underrated single malt?
Hi all,
I too have to say TAMDHU TEN. A lighter (delicious) easy tasting dram. The best part (at least here in Maine) is it's low cost
(about twenty dollars). I'd be a fool not to put aside a few bottles of Tamdhu 10.

Re: Most underrated single malt?
I would nominate Bunnahabhain , not many people get past the standard O.b.'s which is a shame as there are some stunning I.B.'s.....
Re: Most underrated single malt?
C'est moi! I've not gotten beyond the OB Bunnies
. The 12, 18, Darach Ur were enjoyable whiskies.
Still, I guess my vote has to go to the Caol Ila 12yo. It certainly is not overpriced and has been consistently very good. My vote for "underrated" is because of they many who may never try it because of the more famous other Islays.

The Caol Ila 12 is my favourite Islay malt out of those tasted so far. I've tasted the standard OBs from all the distilleries, but not the whole range of expressions.

Re: Most underrated single malt?
I would agree that Balblair and Cragganmore certainly are underated. Many malts are a mystery to many whisky fans as they are only available at specialist retailers etc. When did anyone ever see a bottle of Balblair in a supermarket/off licence, I have only ever seen Balblair at an off licence once, shame.
Can i also venture that Glenfarclas is also an under exposed malt considering some of the excellent quality of their whisky.

Really? Where did you get that information from?
Re: Most underrated single malt?
Glen Moray NAS is underrated in my humble opinion. It's cheap so many may assume it's not very good.

This is totally true in spain cardhu is the most famous whisky malt and the best seller. Probably because was the first malt to be introduce in the pubs and bars. The other malts except glendffidich are totally unknown.
Sorry for my bad english

Re: Most underrated single malt?
My dirty secret (& most under rated Malt) is Balmenach. Very rarely hear it discussed but it is cheap as chips and a great value malt. I used to be able to get Deerstalker 18yo for well under 50Euro. Got a lovely one from Raymond in Bladnoch lately
Is it a fact that it is not bottled much ????

I agree; for me this is still a very good whisky ( so much better than the normal 12 ) and I love the taste of it.
It is however a bit expensive I think...
And what about Glengoyne? I don't read too much about them here ( lately ) but I love this stuff.

I noticed that you'd nabbed this one (the edition with "SINCE 1833" embossed within a raised oval on the glass surface) in your last purchase package, Nick. I happen to be working on pretty much the same bottle, and have to say that I quite like it. Lots of crisp pear-apple maltiness along with good doses of vanilla and ginger. I find it quite different from the standard versions (10, 12, 17) in that it seems to lean much more to an ex-Bourbon wood style (significantly less impact from Sherry casks). Add a couple of drops of water and you're good to go. Let me know what you think about it.

Having just bought a bottle of Glen Moray 12 for a very reasonable price and enjoying
quite a lot, I'll nominate this one as well.

Yes, it's good and I bought mine on sale for $24.99 which doubled the surprise!
Re: Most underrated single malt?
The Bladnoch 8yo at 55% is fantastic and as I hardly ever hear this mentioned I would categorise it as extremely underrated
Re: Most underrated single malt?
I have to agree with some of the previous posters about Glen Elgin and Mortlach.
I had a Glen Moray 16yo the other night and I had forgotten how good it is, as well.
Maybe add Linkwood to the list?

Gee I've gotta Bladnoch, RM 1990 12 yo that I picked up in 1990. Did you miss that one? Maybe there IS justice in the world from time to time.
I'm interested in the Glen Moray as I saw one two years ago as a prize at our Robbie Burns dinner, but didn't win it. Today I found out that a good friend has brought one back for me from his vacation, as he remembered that I'd never had the Glen Moray.
Once I taste it, I'll be able to comment if it's under-rated. Until then, my candidate is the early reddish tube version of Glendronach 15, which was replaced in Canada with the 12 yo version. I picked up the recent Glendronach 15 in the green tube, but it doesn't IMHO hold a candle to the earlier offering.

Hi I am a newbie and i had a crush with Oban, Mortlach, Caol Ila and Glangoyne I don't know if they are underrated.
Mortlach is a bit pricey but is 16 years (around 40£)

Caol Ila 12
Funny that both Lagavulin and Caol Ila are both Diageo-owned Isla malts and I gave Lagavulin my most overrated and Caol Ila as most underrated opinions.

Re: Most underrated single malt?
I've always enjoyed the isle of jura malt especially prophecy and superstition for special occasions and the 10 yo or 16 yo for easy drinking there all reasonable prices and good quality really surprised there not mentioned more often

I've tried the latest Ledaig and agree with you on it being a very nice malt. It actually improves the next day, from my perspective. Enjoy the experience of learning about whisky.

Re: Most underrated single malt?
Underrated because of the low cost, always available, known and drank by almost everybody. The Glenlivet 12 year old needs mention, it just a good dram. I also agree with others that a good malted blend often gets overlooked. One of my favorite blends was/is ??? Johnny Walker Green Label.

Re: Most underrated single malt?
Bowmore. Also I am partial for a medium flavored scotch to the Balvenie Doublewood as a real solid mainstay - a decent scotch for the money. When I want smooth I like Glenmorangie Madera wood (Nectar D'Or). My smooth mainstay used to be Dalwhinnie but no more as of about 15 years ago.
My go to big scotch is of course Lagavulin, but that wasn't the question - Lagavulin gets enough accolades and is not overrated IMHO.

Since June 2010 when I last put a response on here, I can absolutely say with some conviction Inchgower and Teaninich can produce some great drams, especially some of the IB euro bottlers.

I would now add, Inchgower, Macduff, Speyburn, Dufftown and from the lost distilleries Convalmore & Millburn
