Springbank cask sells for £88,750 at Mulberry Bank auction

Postby rebeccaparagraph » Thu Aug 11, 2016 10:36 am

On the 9 August 2016 a lucky buyer had the rare opportunity to secure a cask of the sought after Da Mhile Organic Springbank Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Distilled in 1992 this was the first truly organic Scotch whisky produced in Scotland. Since then it has been quietly maturing in a bonded warehouse in Campbeltown and will next year reach the 25 year old mark. This is the last cask of this distillation warehoused in Scotland.

Details about the cask:
Lot 100
Cask no.: 241
Type of cask: Hogshead
Capacity at filling: 244 Litres
Regauge: 165.3 Litres
Strength: 50.8 %ABV
Estimate: £48000 - £55000

The cask was sold ex-bond, and is currently stored duty free in Glen Scotia Distillery’s warehouse in Campbeltown. The buyer will have a number of options upon purchasing this cask:
- The new buyer could have the cask bottled (there are various options here to do with labelling, choice of bottles, etc; but on average between £4-8 per bottle.)
- The cask could continue to be stored at Glen Scotia Distillery (at the new owner’s expense – approximately £200 pa)
- The cask could be moved under bond to a different bonded warehouse in the UK or overseas.

About Da Mhile (pronounced da-vee-lay)
John Savage-Onstwedder founded the brand in 1992 and commissioned Springbank Distillery to distil the spirit from organic barley and it was duly laid down to mature in ex-Bourbon Hogsheads. Some of the casks were bottled in time for the new Millennium under the Da Mhile brand as a 7 year old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky and is now highly sought after. The 25 Years Old should be even more precious.

John has since built his own distillery in Wales and is now producing his own gin and liqueurs on site, together with the dream of Organic Welsh Single Malt Whisky.
