The distillery, complete with bottling plant, visitor centre and shop, is the brainchild of father and son farming partnership James and Andrew Nelstrop.
The Norfolk Whisky Company will benefit from an investment of about £1 million and the new business, which will be sited near Thetford in Norfolk, will use equipment built by a specialist company in Scotland. An established Scottish distiller will also be used.
Norfolk would seem to be the ideal English location for whisky-making as the region boasts the best barley in Britain, already has a very strong beer culture, and has ready access to quality water.
The plan is to make whisky matured in bourbon barrels, and already port wood and sherry finishes are being considered.
Work is set to begin on the distillery in 2006.
