Hope high for pillaged malt auction

Postby Sally Toms » Mon Nov 14, 2005 5:38 pm

After battling rough seas, the latest batch of pillaged malt is resting in a sherry cask before being bottled in December at Bruichladdich’s bottling plant.

The cask contains 360 litres of 12 year old whiskies, pillaged from nine distilleries at the beginning of summer, when crews braved the treacherous currents around Islay to collect malt in their cask.

This year, Isle of Jura and Bushmills were invited to pour in their 40 litres of whisky too. Following 2003’s success, the Celtic Pillage crews rowed from distillery to distillery to collect the precious cargo.
About £25,000 was raised with the auction of the 2003 Pillaged Malt, the top bid reaching £555.

Organiser Kevin Campbell hopes to raise some £40,000 in March 2006 when the bids for the 500 bottles will be displayed.
Bids will be taken until then on the Celtic Pillage website: http://www.celticpillage.co.uk.

The fundraising will benefit the Children’s Hospital Association Scotland and the Northern Irish Children’s Hospice.
