Welsh Whisky

Postby Rob Allanson » Wed Aug 05, 2009 9:51 am

I heard a great story on the radio yesterday that Russian football fans were being urged to drink whisky to combat swine flu during their trip to Wales for next month's World Cup qualifier.

Rob and the funny thing was that the presenters on the radio station said that there is no such thing as Welsh whisky. Only Scottish and Irish. One of them went on to say as a joke unless there is a distillery at the top of Mount Snowdon.

Oh how little they know.

Don't worry Rob they got plenty of emails, but it shows that not everyone is as keen as us.
Here's a link to the story as reported on yahoo sports news: http://sports.yahoo.com/sow/news?slug=r ... &type=lgns

A quick read found no reference to Welsh whisky, just whisky.
I heard the interview, which was very light-hearted on both sides. The Russian guy just said "malt whisky" - he didn't mention Welsh.

I heard the report as well, it was on radio 4. The one I heard definately sais Welsh whisky, but how many people out there have tried it? If someone gave it to me I'd drink it, it's better than some of the Scotch's I've tried, but I wouldn't buy it.

Penderyn is not bad at all. An attractive bottle too.

«Te Beag» is the only Welsh whisky available near me.
I've never tried it.

Hi Guys,

I had my first taste of Penderyn in the Duty Free at Bristol Airport a couple of weeks ago. It was the Dec 05 bottling which I believe is highly rated in JM bible. I have to say I was dissapointed. I couldn't even get past the nose without wincing. Lots of caramel with a bitter leather taste / after taste. I will say that I had eaten an apple about 15 mins before drinking the malt so maybe my palate wasn't so clean.

I will give it another go at some stage but won't be buying a bottle at £31 quid a pop!!

I won't buy it for 2 main reasons. Cost- I think it is too expensive for what it is. Nose and taste. Further up it is described as leathery, I would have said floral and saddle soap on the nose and herbal in the taste.
