Polly, The True Story Behind Whisky Galore.

I'm surprised I couldn't find a review of this excellent little book as Whisky Galore was such a large cultural episode in Scottish history/folklore.
Roger Hutchison has done an admirable job in tracking down the truth about the sinking of the SS Politician in the Outer Hebrides in 1941.
Eye witness accounts, newspaper clippings, court reports and other sources are all used to build up the true picture of what it was like to live on these remote islands during the war when a ship is stranded with a cargo of whisky that is there for the taking, and take it the islanders did!
The book was originally published in 1990 by Mainstream Publishing. The copy I picked up on Amazon was a 1998 reprint.
A worthy addition to any whisky lovers book shelf.
