ALC-HEM-IST BOTTLINGS

Postby Deactivated Member » Wed Nov 28, 2007 8:37 pm

Last Friday, I attended a tasting of Alc-Hem-Ist bottlings, presented by owner Gordon Wright.

In running order, the malts sampled were:

Authentoshan 16yo
Macallan 15yo
Highland Park
Springbank 10yo Port
Bowmore 9yo
Caol Ila 10yo
Port Charlotte 5yo

We also drammed the company's Armagnac and Calvados for 'dessert'.

What do people think of this firm's offerings?

Hi eelbrook I've tried the Macallan, Port Charlotte and the calvados. I thought for the price they were pretty good.

I notice you make no comment so it would be nice to hear your reflections.

I have had the Springbank 10y, Port Charlotte 5y, (reminds me of my first love affair with Ardbeg Ten!), The Macallan 14y, and the Highland Park 15y. All are good, a bit expensive here in Norway, but that could be because of the importer's pricing policy.

I especially liked the Auchentoshan and the Springbank Port.

Suffice to say that the Caol Ila (since time immemorial my least favourite distillery) was putrid.

I surprised myself with the Port Charlotte. I thought that I'd loathe it. However, post-tasting, I found myself pouring another large dram whilst I chatted to Gordon.

Generally, there was positive feedback from those at the tasting - although several thought that the price points (ie between £37 and £41) were on the high side.

Yikes! Them's fighting words!

Some of the best Islays I've ever had were Caol Ilas. Needless to say, they were IB's - in fact most of them were SMWS bottlings - but there's no doubt that the distillery churns out some delicious stuff.

Over the years, other regular contributors have posted very similar observations.

I am by no means discrediting your opinion, but "putrid" is a pretty strong put-down? !

I guess each to their own.

For me, the likes of Caol Ila, Laphroaig, Talisker, Ardbeg and Lagavulin just don't appeal at all.

But hey, that leaves all the more for the rest of you!

Ah, sorry....that was my misunderstanding.

I thought you were singling Caol Ila out as a poor distillery, but if you just don't like the Islay style in general, then I now understand your comment.

I'm sure that Caol Ila is an excellent distillate. Along with many other heavily peated drams (both from Islay and increasingly the mainland).

But not for me. And my OH won't go near them.

I have tried the PC5 and found it to be an excellent dram.

Anyone who has tried the Alchemist bottling AND the OB?? How do they compare?

Cheers

I agree 100% on Caol Ila bottlings from the SMWS being just better than the OB's. Had my first taste of one last night, and my initial reaction was WOW.
