Dodgy bottle seals

I have recently opened a bottle of Cadenhead's 18-year-old sherry-wood Springbank, and it is really pretty disappointing, with something "off" about it (sob Image ). It has a cork stopper which looks rather soaked and manky, and I wonder whether the whisky has become "corked" like wine does sometimes. Is this possible with whisky? Certainly I have never experienced anything like this with a screw cap bottle (which I tend to prefer anyway, on grounds of lower likelihood of evaporation of my precious hooch).

I doubt that whisky would behave like wine in the bottle, there is no fermentation in the whisky that would generate pressure to penetrate cork. My guess would be that the cork has got wet from outside in some phase and then cork does not seal the aromas as well as dry cork.

Opinions differ, I just couldn't trust on screw cap bottle after it is opened. IMO, when the screw cork "dries" after opening it evaporates more than "cork cap".
