Old Bottle of Rum

Postby mr.mike » Sat Jan 28, 2017 6:12 am

Hello all,
I'm new on this forum, and look forward to hearing from you. Just rediscovered an old bottle of rum we found while cleaning out my father-in-law's apartment. We've had it in our liquor cabinet for over 20 years, but never really gave it much thought until the other day. A friend suggested I join a collector forum with hopes of gaining a bit of history about it. Here's what we've got: Ron Superior De Lopo, Alvarez y CA Compania Licorera de Cuba, SA The label says it was 45 years old at the time of purchase. Not sure how long my father-in-law had it, he passed when he was almost 90 years of age more than 20 years ago. The overall condition is excellent, unopened and all labels and markings are in good condition. Even the original tax label is intact. I'd appreciate any help you may be able to offer.

mr.mike,

I'm not sure if you are following this post any longer, but your bottle dates to about 1945-46...well before the company was 'Nationalized' by Fidel Castro in 1960.

The brand of rum usually had a foil capsule made of 'soft lead', but between 1941-1945 this material was in high demand for munitions production during WWII...so most bottlers discontinued using them due to this.

I have 2 additional bottles of Lopo, Alvarez & Co in my collection of Cuban Rums, as well as a ton of research note & vintage advertising: If you need additional assistance on this bottle, I would be more than happy to provide you with what information I have in my research files!

Cheers,
Walter C Hurst
