18 year old islays to try?

Postby LovePeat » Thu Feb 06, 2014 10:11 pm

I've had Laphroaig 18 so far, and would like to know what other 18 year islays to go for.

Answering your question strictly, you'll probably like Bowmore 18. Caol Ila has an 18 that's lighter on the peat. I would also suggest Lagavulin 16. Can't think of any other peaty Islays in that age range. Wait a few years for PC18?

Which begs the question, why 18-year? Laphroaig 10 is probably more similar to Laphroaig 18, than the Bowmore 18. Don't be caught up by age statements. Especially on peaty whiskies.

Well, there are not many 18 y.o. peated OB Islays around these days. Whiskgeek already named the few that are available apart from the Laphroaig. There used to be an interesting 16 to 18 y.o. Ardbeg called Arigh Nam Beast but expect to pay more than 100 pounds in an auction today.
If you are especially interested in older peatsters I would recommed looking out for an independent bottling of older Caol Ila or maybe Laphroaig, as older Lagavulins and Ardbegs have become very rare and expensive.

I accidentally created two threads instead of one somehow.

Too much scotch I guess, I'm a scot, so I'm not to be blamed. :P Actually, its the "save" button that confused me.

Anyways, Ardbeg Uigeadail seems to have more deeper character than Laphroaig 18 but I've only had 15ml of Laphroaig 18. Maybe I need to spend more time on the 18.
