International Whiskey

Postby Aidan » Fri Mar 25, 2005 7:17 am

I believe that Jon, Mark and Robbo's Smooth Sweeter One is now going to be a "vatting" of Cooley malt and a Scottish malt. I can't remember which one though.

Bunnahabhain according to their web-site. But their claim that this is the first multi-country malt whisky is simply not true. There have been a handful of international vatted malts in the past (e.g. Antipodean, Nikka Pure 'White', Celtic Desire). Celtic Desire is a vatting of Irish and Scottish malts, so JMR's new Smooth Sweeter One isn't even the first 'Celtic malt'.

Lex

I think William Jameson may have had an Irish-American blend too, but I couldn't be sure.

And a bourbon-Canadian blend has just come on the market (Phillips Union).

Cradle Mountain distillery vatted their Tasmanian single malt with Springbank years ago!

(I've still got a half-finished bottle actually.....must get back on to that one!)

Admiral, is that not the Antipodean mention above by lexkraai?

To be honest, Mr T, I'm not sure.

The Cradle Mountain & Springbank vatting was always bottled and marketed as "Cradle Mountain Double Malt." (At least on these shores.) Perhaps it was labelled & marketed differently (i.e. Antipodean) overseas?

'Antipodean' and 'Cradle Mountain Double Malt' are both vattings of Springbank and Cradle Mountain. This vatting was bottled under both names, though I'm not sure whether it was for different markets or different points in time.

Look at the name on the box in the third picture at http://www.tasmanianwhisky.com.au/speed ... inest.html

Hmmm, that's interesting.

I still have my bottle of Cradle Mountain Double Malt, as featured in the link Lex posted above, but the label makes no mention of the word Antipodean, and it didn't come in an Antipodean box.

Still, bugger the packaging or the name, it's still pretty nice whisky.

Cheers,
Admiral
