I need some help!
I'd like to buy a bottle of whisky for a friend but without actually asking them what they like.
I've seen him drink Talisker, Laphroaig and Woodford Reserve when we've been out. I don't know what age he normally drinks of them, just the usual pub standard I guess.
I'd like to get him something less mainstream that isn't available in every supermarket you go to!
I've got a budget of up to about £50. What would people recommend that's interesting and he's likely to like for that price?
Thanks so much for your help!
Talisker have just released a No Age Statement called "Storm" thats around £45 but that'll find its way to the supermarkets soon i imagine.
If you want to go to £60 you can grab a Talisker 57 north - it's a pretty much cask strength No Age whisky (57%) and it's stunning.
'phroaig wise you can tag a Laphroaig Tripple Wood for around £45. Very, very good and you don't seem them in the supermarkets.....
....that's your lot, unless you want to extend your budget or go elsewhere, such as Ardbeg.
Ardbeg Uigeadail is £55 with delivery, 54.2% and one of the best whiskies you're going to get for your money. It's a rich and smokey beast. I love Tali and 'phroaig, and Ardbeg is one of my favs too, so it should suit his palate.
Ardbeg 10 £40 ish *
Ardbeg Uigeadail £50+ *
Lagavulin 16 £45 ish
Caol Ila Distillers Edition £50
Caol Ila 'Moch' £40
Caol Ila Natural Cask Strength £50 *
Port Charlotte Peat Project £30+
Port Charlotte 10 £35+
I put an '*' next to my personal top 3 recommendations. That's all i than think of supermarket wise, most are available from most Waitrose, Booths or possibly a Sainsbury, except the Uigeadail, you may need to find a specialist for that. I haven't listed any duds, all of those are well regarded.
Let us know what you get. And also if he liked it.
I think I'm going to go for the Ardbeg Uigeadail as I can't find a bad word said about it. Seems like a pretty good bet!
I'll let you know how it goes, once again, thanks for your help!
