New - Help With Selecting Bourbon

Postby adz2332 » Thu Mar 07, 2013 2:25 am

Im new to these forums, but having fun reading so far!

My question is, i have a new boss at work and he loves bourbon as much as i do.
He wants me to go down the shop and pick up a bottle to share of a fri night.
I want to slightly impress him without going in the $100 dollar mark, but the run of the mill (crap tasting) Jim Beam wont work!
What is worth looking at between say $50 to $75 dollar mark?
Im in australia, adelaide to.

I have thought about Eagle rare or makers mark, maybe even gentleman Jack. all under the $70 dollar mark.

Any other ideas?

Classics in that price bracket i would suggest would be the following:

Buffalo Trace - smooth, nice gentle touch of rye and is really approachable.
W.L.Weller - same mash bill as the legendary Pappy Van Winkle range, is a classic crowd pleaser
Blantons straight from the barrel - more aggressive than the previous two with a dusty popcorn style, it is at a highly alcohol volume but worth a good punt!

Not sure about the availability of these in Australia (i'm writing from the UK) but hope it helps!

Looking at Dan Murphy's site to assess prices i would definitely go for the Russell's Reserve 10yo at $80. Other good options would be the Eagle Rare 10 at $68. Looking around, others i can see with credentials would be Four Roses Small Batch $85 and the FR Single Barrel $110. If you want to go for it with the budget them the Parker's Heritage at $140 would be impressive.

That Russell's Reserve 10 has the 8) factor imo.

Likewise. I'd add:

Wild Turkey Rare Breed $71.99 (classic balance and taste)
Baker's $69.90 (a little young tasting, but spicy and substantial)

Seems bredman knows more about the booze scene in Australia than I do these days, though I do know that Dan Murphey's has Makers Mark on Special this week for $37 at least in Queensland.
There's plenty of online sites in Australia with a larger range than DM but nothing you'd get by today. The sites listed on my blog sell bourbon as well.
