Laphraoig 40 Year Old

Postby onewman » Mon Jan 23, 2012 4:23 am

I have an opportunity to purchase a Laphraoig 40 year old for $400. Is it really worth it? I have the 10, 15, 18, 21, and 25 and am considering completing the set. Your thoughts please.

How much do you wish to complete the set? 'Worth', 'value', and 'cost' are different things to different people. If your pockets are deep then you would pay the several thousand this now costs at retailers (available for £1500-£2500 here), but there are more people out there that would never pay as much as $400 for any whisky.

Fwiw that is a very low price.

I'd say if you have the cash, and it doesn't seem too painful to spend that much on any one bottle, it would definitely be worth it. Or you can purchase the bottle and wait for a little bit while you decide, and then sell it for a fair amount more if you choose not to keep it.

If you don't buy it tell me where it is so I can buy it. Based on your list you need a 30 too.

I'll be picking it up this Friday if it's still available. They had 3 or 4 bottles when I was there, so I'll disclose the location after I get one (or 2). Thanks for the heads up on the 30, I guess I'll have to keep looking to finish the set. The 25 I have is the 2008 US Cask Strength. Thanks for the input all.

If it is $400 for the 40 YO (and not the 30 YO), I would most interesting in buying a couple of them.

If it's truly a Laphroaig official 40 yo bottling (hard green case with metal plaque on the front), DEFINITELY pick it up for that price. That's INSANELY cheap.

I've owned one and we cracked it last year: Awesome whisky. I've never been super stoked on the 30yo (really good, but not exceptional), but the 40 is absolutely sublime.

And, as others have said, if you don't want it, let me know - I'd pick one up in a nano-second for that price!

Enjoy!

This does seem rather suspect. From the OP i assumed it was a private sale of just one available bottle where the odd extreme bargain is to be had. But 3 or 4 suggests a retailer, and the provenance of the bottling would suggest a specialist retailer. It's not often they would misvalue so many bottles.

Unless we're talking about out of the boot/trunk of a car in a car park somewhere. :insane:

Picked up two bottles today and not from a boot :D Here in the states we have liquor stores and our specialist stores are just really big liquor stores. Enjoy the liquor porn gents.
