What is your whisky of the year for 2010?

Postby Onefortheditch » Tue Sep 14, 2010 7:05 am

Forget Jim Murray and his Ardbeg hype. What is the best whisky you've tasted this year?

For me the best one I've tasted is an Old Malt Cask Ben Nevis 13YO 50% fiinished in a red wine cask.

Its miles better than any Ardbeg I've ever tasted.

Mmmm, I might just wait to answer that after the last 3 and a half months of the year has finished.

Augh, how I'd love to shoot on over to Japan to try this before the year is out:

Limited to 1000 unfortunately... may not be able to find any by the time I'm over there again! :(

I really liked the Ben Nevis 25. There was also a Connemara 17 from a sherry cask that might be the best I've tasted this year. Probably lots more will spring to mind.

So far, definitely the Longmorn 37 yo 1972 by Whisky Agency.
But it seems a few exiting things are still to come.

I will have to wait at least until the whisky live Paris (at the end of this week) and the last released at the Whisky Schiff Zürich, but the Auchentoshan 1977 OB is so far my best candidate.

Personally I think the 2010 bottling of Springbank 10 for the price is just astonishing.

I had a lot of good whisky in 2010, probably my best whisky. A lot of the whisky that goes around at events, tasttings and private tastings are often releases from earlier years, it can a bit hard to keep track of the release years. Here are the best 2010 releases I had so far

Glengoyne 37yo by Nectar of the daily drams
Glen Moray 36yo by Duncan Taylor (cask 7037)
Caperdonich 37 by Duncan Taylor (cask??)
Imperial 12yo 55% Whiskies of Scotland (Duncan Taylor)
Plowed Benriach

Runners up are
Amrut Intermediate Sherry Matured
Ardbeg Rollercoaster
Ardbeg Uigedail

- Bunnahabhain 35yo 1973 TWA
- Caol Ila CS 58.6 %

- Karuizawa 1992 cask 6978
- Cask of the Yamazaki 1993 Heavily Peated cask 3Q70048

Springbank 12yo Claret Wood.

Definitely not a crowd pleaser, but crikey, I love it.

The malt that blew my socks off this year was the Karuizawa 32yo Noh cask 6719 - for me, it gave a whole new meaning to the expression "sherry monster"...

I was surprised & impressed by the Berry Bros Ledaig 2005 and also the Kilkerran 6yo WIP...

A great year so far!

The year is not over yet but it's gona be difficult to find better than the laphroaig 1964/1981 43° by BBR!

The amrut double cask is indeed a very impressive whisky and well worth the price(still, I didn't buy a bottle. I can't buy everything) and the serie of caperdonich 1972 by DT are very good quality/price whisky(and very good at all, I must say)

Lochside 46 years (11/1963-03/2010) WINs 5th anniversary special bottling 46.6% was not only one of the best 2010 bottlings but one of the best whiskies I could ever try.

I had a bottle of Talisker 10 from sainsburys again, and it was as good as the last one which makes it about the best whisky i have tasted this year :) I've bought lots of other bottles but i cant afford to drink them at the moment, so yes Talisker 10yr old, the best of the year and possibly of next year unless i get a pay rise.

Its a bit early really, to say what the personal whisky of the year is as yet....Particularly when there is unopened bottles of Laga 12 , Ardbeg Corry, Laph Cairdeas, Laph cask, and a LOT more on the side, not opened and not tried before!

However, I have had some very nice surprises this year. Caol Ila DE (93) Nikka all Malt....Ben Nevis 10.....

The real surprise was the Longrow CV . I DO like that whisky..and at that price ,its not bank breaking. So, some lessons learned, and plenty of scope for future delights

Best new whisky I've had this year would be Laphroaig Cask Strenght (red stripe). But that might not last as I've recieved a few samples today that should be very promising.

The year is almost done and so far the best I've tasted is Yamazaki 18 8)

Some other contenders would be Glengoyne 16 Shiraz Cask Finish, Glenmorangie Sonnalta PX, Lagavulin 12 CS edition 2010.

But I intend buying one new whisky later this week that will probably take 1st place... more about that one after I tasted it over the weekend :P
