Another Welcome, Sir Sherry.

After Laphroaig 10, I am a bit surprised you gave scotch another go. I have tried an older version (cannot remember which one...perhaps my amnesia was a psychological defense) and I can still only drink the stuff if I pour it over haggis.

Glenfiddich 12, is that the special reserve? I thought I would always hate scotch after that. I posted Balvenie earlier, but I actually had glenfiddich first, but I was about 15.

Welcome. This is almost exactly what happened to me, except it was Glenfiddich that rehabilitated me, and I have grown to love peaty whiskies with Laphroaig amoung my favourites.

I remember my first Laphroaig. This was back in the days when I still had only tried Glenlivet & Balvenie (and still occasionally took my Scotch on the rocks). I was out at an Elephant & Castle celebrating the passing of one of my first professional exams and decided to go crazy and try a few drams off of their (what I considered at the time) very impressive list of single malts. When I got to the Laphroaig 10, I nearly spit it out. My comment to the waitress was something along the lines of "Is this supposed to taste like this? Did someone spike my drink with novacain?". She laughed.

It wasn't until a few years later when I tried a few Islays at the Philadelphia Whisky Festival that I learned how much I actually love the stuff.

Love it or hate it...sometimes hate it now, and love it later. After a long stretch of trying to "get" whisky, I had the light turned on by Lagavulin. I'd been in Scotland a couple times already, and the smoky malt reminded me of the peat fires I'd smelled in hotels and homes in the Highlands.

Laphroaig 10 it was the first Islay I bought a bottle of, I got it while visiting Dusseldorf Germany and I made a good dent in it while I was working in the Netherlands. SInce then the bottle has sat on my shelf at home I have had a few drams from it but there is about one good dram left and I can't bring myself to finish it, I bought the bottle about 2 years ago and it sits there waiting to be finished, I just bought a bottle of the 15 yr old and I think I'm going to open it to help bid farwell to my first of many bottles of islay malt. It's nice to remember firsts, I will always have a Laphroaig open because of that first bottle.

Hello Drammers, TheDude here hailing from Belgium.

My first whisky (albeit not a single malt) was a standard fare Jameson. Tried it straight... Tried it with ice and with water... Bwech! is the only word that comes to mind.

One year later I tried a 18-year-old Macallan and figured... "THAT's what I imagined whisky should taste like!"

Since then, big fan of Macallan, Glenfarclas 12 and Talisker 10. Only recently tried the Lagavulin 16 (much loved here, it seems) and loved it. Will probably end up buying one!
