Balblair 97

Something to settle me down after the Isle of Jura Superstition.

Ahhhh smooth, soft, buttery, vanilla, ripened pears, lolly bag, creme caramel, oak kept nicely in check, more vanilla. A truely sensuous malt.

OK finished, now where did I put that nut bag IOJS..............................

Black Bottle 10 Year...power of suggestion from the "Does it matter to you if a whisky has a screw cap" thread in Whisky Chat. :-)

Very nice Tim, we had this at WL one of my mates bought a bottle on the strength of it. In hindsight I should have done so as well. :)

I do like it Les! My bottle got low so I poured the rest into a 100ml and 50ml sample bottle for future use.

The 50ml only made it a few weeks!

A 'combo'...

1/3 Caol Ila 12YO, 1/3 Oban 1983DE and 1/3 Old Pulteney 12YO

Good sweet-dry balance, perhaps leaning just slightly toward the latter.
Nice medium textural weight with oak gripping on the finish.
A very seaside demeanour!

I'm not a great sherry fan - except for this and a'bunadh (though 'farclas and other Aberlours also work for me).
But this is excellent!

Is this actually Macallan, or something else that dare not speak its name? Glad to hear it's good, though. I've often thought of picking some up...

The MacPhunn is very, very good. Not sure if it's Macallan or not, but it's a really good example of a sherried whisky. I always look for a little bit of sulphur/burnt match in sherried whiskies though, and this has none of that so I was a little upset :P

Fancied a change from the Glenmorangie, so have moved onto a Linlithgow Cognac finish. Jury's still out on this to be honest - I don't think the Cognac does it too many favours.

It seems I was in the mood for some Bowmore tonight, starting with the 12yo. This bottle is really growing on me, I'd have to say I'm finding it very drinkable.

Decided to reach for my Aultmore 16yo 1990/2007 SMoS as my nightcap. Love this one - sherried like you won't believe!

Bunnahabhain 18. What a lovely and underrated whisky this is. I'm sure it would receive a much better rep if it was from somewhere else than Islay.

Excellent dram , probably my Fav of the 3 Standards (12/18/25) but you really need to try the Darach Ur!

Hm, thanks for the tip Gordon. I'll have to investigate and see where I can get it. I see it's not available from RMW - is this a taxfree edition only?

Just poured a Glendullan 26 Rare Malts. Good with pineapple scents - but perhaps not worth GPB 100,- - unless one is into butterfly collecting.

Hm, interesting Nick. But each to his own and I suppose if one is looking for a full peat attack one is not going to be satisfied with something which is different? I know it's wrong to make assumptions but I felt exactly like that when I was new to whisky. The peatier the better but it's different now.

Caol Ila 1994/2006 G&M CC. A little lighter than the OBs but still good.

Just finished a sample of Longrow CV from DanAir that I've had for several months. One down, many more samples to go...

Hmm, what to choose next...?

Went with the 2008 bottling 10yo Ardbeg. Pear drops, peat and pepper on the nose, peat and antiseptic cream on the palate. Lovely stuff!

You must have the same 50ml 2-pack sampler that I picked up at Sportsman's. :-)

Tonight, however, I had Lagavulin 1991 DE and Ardbeg 10. I still think I rank the Ardbeg slightly below the Lagavulins, but it's amazing how well it holds up to those at a much lower price.

OMC Clynelish 17YO 1989

This is big flavoured whisky! You can nose this from 5 feet away! Some of the sherry of A'bunadh mixed with the vanilla of Nadurra overlaid with the ever present coffee liqueur style of Kahlua. Finishes with a touch of Longrow style smoke. Quite rich then dry at the end.

Would be an excellent desert dram. Well unless like me your drinking it at 4 in the afternoon.

Definately worth the USD$45 I paid for it!
