I have no idea what sort of flavours you prefer, but have you considered any Irish whiskeys? They are lighter - but not inferior - than most Scotches. Try a Bushmills 10, or even the blended Black Bush. Maybe even a Kilbeggan. These are fruity and smooth and very easy to drink. Som would say too demanding, but I find them very charming and certainly appropriate (and doesn't cost a fortune!) if you are just entering the wonderful world of uisge!
Two ways of introduction:
(1) Smooth one. Since you mentioned Lowlands, my recommendation would be Auchentoshan Three Wood (not just triple distilled!). And as to Irish pure pot stills, I am sure you will enjoy Redbreast and Powers Millenium.
(2) Cognitive one. I would recommend Redbreast, Laphroaig, Caol Isla, and aforementioned Auchentoshan. Then you will know in which direction to go.
