Recommendation for a newbie

Postby pendolo » Sun Nov 13, 2011 12:19 pm

Hi, what would you recommend for a multi cask/wood (rum/sherry) whisky with lots of flavour and persistence and a touch of peat for up to £40/45?

Thanks :D

If your looking for rum influence without spending too much, try balvenie's 14 year old rum cask.

I have Sherry finished whisky's that have rum like elements. You won't be able to buy them though so I suggest you might look on a site like The Whisky Exchange and read the descriptions of sherried whiskys to find something similar.

I think you'll have a bit of a challenge ahead of you in terms of finding a whisky that combines ex-Sherry and ex-Rum cask characteristics... certainly one in which the Sherry casks were rather more 'active' (i.e. first-fill) ones.

You're much more likely to come across whiskies that have been aged in ex-Bourbon oak as well as in ex-Rum casks (usually finished in the latter). One such whisky I've enjoyed is Benriach's Arumaticus Fumosus 12 Year Old. It's pretty tasty.
