n: vanilla with peat, like creme brulee on wood. like candy. Fresh
t: sweet, like ice cream with chilies.
f: a bit spicy but that goes away quickly, the finish is rather short because within 15 seconds I'm sipping again...
n: fruits with kippers! Sherry with peat. New car scent. Cooked fruits
t: lots of leather, sherry, chocolate, cooked fruits. Apricots?
f: sweeter and far less dry than ecpected.
c: very nice nose which keeps developing,
...or as Harry Enfield would say, "Only Me!"
Just back from a late gig and doing a head to head: last years A10 and this years' s in the new "wavy" green box and tidied up label.
there is little to choose between the two...but there are definite differences.
NASAL COMMENTS:well, I'd say one of the world's best noses just got better! the newer one is a bit gentler, yet sweeter and deeper. It reminds me of my SMWS Caol Ila...which in turn I said would give any good Ardbeg a run for its money!
PALATE. The "old" one has lemon, a touch of pine cleaner...and even the Cream Soda that was being spoken of!The new one has a touch of extra tar...and is rounder.
FINISH. both exhibit the classic clean sea-air with a touch of "stick of rock" or candy floss and lemon, but the new one has something I've never come across before in this dram. On the everpresent sea-air and smoke...there's sweet tomatoes!
It's Been a GREAT bottle!
NOSE continues the theme of the Ten(well, it almost IS one) but the higher ABV gives it more body. Sweet peat in spades...and the spades are digging sand in a rockpool on the beach. One to get your nose stuck in
PALATE> More raw, more round, more oily than the ten. Hint of tomato again! Sweeter than the ten. Still a medicinal twang. a bit of zing with cracked pepper and a twist of lemon.A Laphroaig CS moment. It gets sweeter on the arrival with every sip, even a hint of licorice this time...but the peat is always there. A lovely Ardbeg. reminiscent of the Oogie, but not quite as smooth. Only a couple of drams left...for a rainy day!!
FINISH. Longer than an American freight train...in fact you'd want a mouthfull of this to entertain your tastebuds at a level crossing, when one of those 3 mile trains goes by...and you've got nowhere to go but watch freight truck after freight truck going "ding ding ding..."
Then, a big burp full of custard cream biscuits and sea air...
That's me done folks. the nippers'll be jumping on me in a few hours time...

It's never too late to add some notes in if you'd like. Yesterday I was taken away as well, but I still have 5 samples here that I'll be doing notes on in the very near future.
As for the Ardbegs... well, I ended up being out all night last night so had no chance of getting through any. Then I had a family meal this afternoon and really didn't want to be smelling of whisky around everyone else, and by the time we got back I was too full to even consider drinking.
However, now I'm in the mood for dramming so I'll be going through at least a couple of expressions later on. I'll put my notes up as and when I can. Any samples I don't manage to get through tonight I'll do sometime late next week, as I no longer drink whisky during the first part of the week unless I'm on holiday, which I'm not quite yet
Nose: Briny, with some seaweed, smoke and peat. A little medicinal. Surprisingly sweet (caramel, toffee, maybe a little honey). Quite peppery. Possibly a little cereal and the faintest touch of mint. Citrus fruit (lemon and a touch of orange. Also lemon-flavoured sweets - Pez springs to mind!). Chocolate and vanilla. Plasticine? A slight hint of soap in the background. Very well balanced.
Palate: Initially briny, developing pepper, smoke, some peat, a hint of fish and a little fruit after a few seconds. Also some mint and caramel. Quite chewy. Becomes a touch drying.
Finish: Smoky! Peat, chocolate, mint, citrus fruit and a small amount of seaweed and fish. The smoke and citrus fruit are persistent.
I wasn't overly impressed the first time I tried this expression, but over time I've grown to love it!
One down, six to go - though not all tonight...
the 1977 is probably the most outstanding Ardbeg I've had. did a H2H with the ten I remember. It stood up well. But the '77 was that much smoother..with more "layers" as I recall. It's been a couple of years...
I would say one of the Oogies would be next(I've had a few) on my list of Ardbegs. I actually tried one again right after the Renaissance at WL this year...and preferred it!
Ardbeg 1998/2004 'Very Young' ( 58.3%, OB, 2004 )
Nose: Light citrus fruits, seaweed and peat, a hints of wet newspaper
Palate: It's very big, young and hot, oily, sweet peat, raw burnt wood, and hints of smoked ham.
Finish: Very long, phenolic, tons of wood smoke.
Comment: I like it, first time I try this and it's tasty stuff indeed! Many thanks to Tim (lohssanami) for this sample!!
Nose: Sea salt and maritime notes, some vanilla, sweet peat and hints of unripened apples.
Palate: Nice and oily with smoked meats, burnt wood and seaweed.
Finish: Nice sweet peat at first, then a long finish of burnt wood from a fresh lit fireplace hangs around.
Comment: Very nice young Ardbeg, big smoke!! Thanks again to Tim (lohssanami) for this sample!!
After nosing the glass when it was empty, couldn't help but get the smell of cooked bacon!
Nose: More peat, more medicinal, little to no fruits, burnt wood.
Palate: Vanilla/cocoa mix, then seaweed, peat and pepper.
Finish: Long. peaty, nice and smokey. More balanced finish than the ASY.

Nose: Beautiful balance of peat, vanilla, cocoa and all those wonderful Ardbeg maritime notes just float around in the background.
Palate: YESS! Everything the 10 has to offer plus some!! This is nicely balanced, dark chocolates and vanilla, with peat and wood smoke, all with a very nice oily feel to it.
Finish: Long oily and peaty.
Comment: Excellent stuff!!!
I enjoyed revisiting the following:
Very Young - Raw, young and full of fire.
Still Young - Warm and sweeter than the VY.
Almost There - If the Ren didn't taste so good, I'd say this one "was" there.
Renaissance - Great bottle.
10 (L7) - Pretty relaxed after the previous 4, but still a peat monster.
Uigeadail (L6) - I like this one no matter where I taste it in this order.
Airigh Nam Beist (L6) - Nice and soothing at this point.
I got to enjoy a 2nd taste of:
Corryvreckan - thanks to Ras though ryguy...this one is really a great tasting whisky with lots of stuff going on.
1978 Vintage (thanks Mikey) - I'd really like to get a bottle of this one.
I tasted for the first time:
Serendipity - thanks to Nick (C57)...this one was interesting.
17 (L0 43% US version) - wish this one was still available under $100.
Lord of the Isles - thanks again to Nick (C57) for this great sample. I need a bottle of it...
