I've never added water to the Laphroaig. It's perfect just the way it is.
The Ardbeg however, I've started adding water to it. For some reason I didn't like the taste of the Uigeadail at first. And just when I started cursing myself for wasting $80, I read somewhere about adding a few drops of water to release the taste.
It works! Now I find myself reaching for the Ardbeg more than the Laphroaig. I'm even contemplating replacing the rapidly diminishing bottle of Uigeadail on my next whisky store binge.
