Empty Bottle

Postby TheShrink » Tue May 27, 2008 11:38 am

Well my 18 year old Highland Park is, sadly, at an end.

At the moment I've a couple Macallans open, an Isle of Jura (the 10 year old I find almost undrinkable, Treacle gave me Superstition which is marginally better), a splendid 15 year old Bruichladdich, an Edradour and a Lagavulin open.

What should I go for next, to replace this empty bottle?

Tempted by Caol Ila but am open to ideas, is there anything I should be picking up to drink right now that's especially scrumptious?

Are you looking for something similar in character to HP18? Otherwise, is there anything in particular you're looking for in the whisky.

P.S. I second your opinion on the Jura :yuk:. Love the Caol Ila though!

A Caol Ila 12 is always a rightous choice and the NAS Cask Strength is absolutely splendid, but when I when I see "especially scrumptious" I think Aberlour a'bunadh! :P

Cheers!

if you enjoyed the Lagavulin you could jump to Laphroaig, which is the next step IMHO. Not softer like the Laddy though, and really came off as absent the floral notes in the Laga, so I suppose it depends on which direction you want to head on the islay spectrum.

I did enjoy the Caol Ila 18 but for my money you can't beat Laphroaig in the peat/smoke space. I enjoyed all of their standard offerings, 10, 15 and Quarter Cask.

I would recommend the Lappy 10 but don't take my word for it, ask TreacleSponge. Although I understand from your perspective, "she's mad as a sack of rats, so best avoided.".

:D

Must be a relative thing, eh?

Why not try a Glen Garioch?

Just like you I like the HP18 a lot and one of myworst was Jura 10.
I would suggest: Springbank 10 or the already mentioned Caol Ila CS.

Sorry, no edit button!!

I stress that I refer to the 15 Springbank! the Highland Park 15 I find nonddescript, lacking the charm and "drinkability" of the 12, and the depth of the 18.

The Aberlour and Glenfarclas recommendations I would second but I'll add the Glengoyne 17 - just to be different.

No, I think she' related. Still, "mad as a sack of rats" I loved that comment - I would imagine they'd be pretty testy getting tossed into a smelly old sack, eh?

Glengoyne 17 is also a good suggestion, well done for suggesting it.
