Re: Isle of Barra Distillery
I've never heard of the distillery but Barra is lovely (although I've only ever seen in in glorious sunshine).
The geography seems a bit suspect, though. The claim that the Outer Hebrides are 90 miles from the mainland is wrong. Barra might have a 90 mile ferry crossing to Mallaig, but the distance from Lewis is not that far - and now Skye is part of the mainland Scalpay is very close indeed. And I thought Barra was roughly circular - rather than 12 miles long and 2-3 miles wide.

Re: Isle of Barra Distillery
Hi there,
I do not think that there is a distillery on Barra as yet. Plans were under way but the last entry on their own home page is form 29th November 2005 where they say that they have bought a water source.
Afik nothing ever came of the plans for Barra distillery.
Greetings

Hey Woodhill .... maybe start with a single cask before you think about buying a whole distillery

Yes.... It says there is a discount for and cask bought before end of 2007. I'd doubt that they's have that sort of statement there since 2005. But hey you never know

Re: Isle of Barra Distillery
Hi there,
if you google for it there is no news to be found that Barra Distillery has been
a) started to be build
b) finished building
c) opened
d) starting production
e) filling the first cask
f) etc
All news about Barra is 2005 or before.
Is there a distillery on Barra?
Greetings

The Distillery project is creeping forward, there appear to be a good number of hurdles they have to cross before they can start to build it.
The Castlebay Bar has just been painted. I had fears it would loose somethinkg of its character as it appeared to be very bright, but once everything was put back in place, there was no real difference. By the time the Vatersay Boys took the stage on Saturday evening - normal service has resumed. By the way the guy doing the painting also painted it last time it was done - in 1977 (I think he said). He may get another go before he retires.
If you are planning Barrafest, it would be good to meet you - I can't put a face to more than a couple of folk on here.

Believe it or not, I was on Barra when the Vatersay Boys were playing at the Castlebay Bar (Saturday 9 June 2007) but was too tired to go after a busy day on Mingulay and Pabbay.

Re: Isle of Barra Distillery
Wasn't there a movie called, "Barra Barra"?

Re: Isle of Barra Distillery
There was a "movie" (or fillum as we know them) caled Whisky Galore that was about a cargo of whisky that washed up on Eriskay, which is the next door island to Barra.

It would have one great technological advantage. A Barra soap would be the perfect solution to frothing in the washbacks...

It now says before the end of 2008. Hmm...
Re: Isle of Barra Distillery
It's Scotch mist as we used to say. the two share holders are the owner and his son, the only thing they hve done is to install wind turbines, the owner is also a director of the community wind turbine company. My opinion is that if anyone bought a cask of the whisky I would consider asking for my money back or at least a share in the income from the electricity generated on Heaval. In recent years the company was close to being wound up and had to renew its planning permission for the distillery site because it had failed to start building within the time limits.
