Coffee, too early in the AM for anything else...

Headed to hunting camp so I'm sure me and my dad will down a few drams the next couple nights.

Yamazaki 12 Year Old... Cleaner and more crisp tonight than it can (on occasion) seem, perhaps because I'm drinking it after a pizza dinner.

One totally unusual pour followed by a more familiar one...

First up, some Johnnie Walker Red Label (served 'blind'). What made this so unusual, however, was that the whisky came from a quart-sized bottle dating back to the 1950s. Truthfully, I would have never in a million years pegged it as Scotch. Whether marked down to the blend of that era and/or the ameliorating effects of many decades in bottle (it had, apparently, been stored in quite ideal conditions), the aroma and flavour hinted at something much more akin to a North American spirit than a Scottish one. Either which way, a most refreshing and clean palate presentation with a surprising degree of depth and lenght once the initial glossy smoothness began to subside. In short, a revelation of sorts.

Then on to High West Rendezvous Rye. Delicious! The bottle's contents are all too rapidly being depleted.

Compass Box Spice Tree. I continue to be impressed by this stuff. Definitely a bit of spice, but well complemented by a bit of sweetness and rich flavours.

lockejn wrote:My first (and second) taste of Evan Williams Single Barrel (#467). Another stunning value. It's a wholly different spirit from the black label. Reminds me quite a bit of Four Roses Single Barrel, though not quite as floral (and a fair bit cheaper). A little sweeter than I'd prefer, but a real winner.

So for you it's worth the premium over the black label? I just finished a bottle of the black label and was really surprised and impressed by it, regardless of the fact that it's cheap (which makes it that much better). I think the SB is a bit more locally for me ($27) than you posted in the purchase thread, but the quality of the standard Evan Williams tempts me to give it a go, even though there are so many other bourbons calling me to give them a try.

A spur of the moment melange, consisting of:

A drop of Ardbeg Uigeadail
A drop or two of Highland Park 15 Year Old Earl Magnus
A drop or two of Old Pulteney 12 Year Old
A few drops of Glenlivet 15 Year Old French Oak Reserve

This combination has it all.

Lucky you Sean, I forgot to put one in my order from Germany, was devastated that it was missing.

Now I'm sipping some Ramos Riserva 2009.
Some very faint oak, lots of blackberry and black currant on the nose. A very dry, yet fresh, finish with lots of apple peels.

I don't think EW SB 2000 is sweet. The finish is very dry. Not a bourbon for me though other praise it.

Vecchia Romagna Riserva, a rather sweet Italian brandy with a lot of cough syrup on the nose. This was preceded by the excellent Appelton Estate 12yo and a a Caol Ila 12yo.

The SB is clearly a more mature and complex whiskey, but the black label is still very good. They're both good (and good values) in different ways.

To be honest I don't drink a whole lot of bourbon, I'm just taking a "tour" of bourbon country to find one or two worthy of keeping on hand. Chances are neither of these will find a permanent home on my shelf, but they're better than many others I've tried and nearly unbeatable at the respective prices.

Thanks for that lockejn.
