Want to get a Glenlivet 18, not sure though.

Im spending too much money on whisky given my disposable income

I just today bought

Lagavulin 16YO
Caol Ila 12 year old
Glenlivet Nadurra 16YO @ 56.9% Cask Strength

Thats not long after the HP 18. Expensive game this whisky.
But I'm sure to be sorted for a few months at least. Thats it. No more.

Anyway, got the Laga 16 after tasting it last night. bought it today.
Thankfully, I tasted the Livet 18 - did not enjoy but when I saw that the Nadurra was CS, I thought I'd try it and I've opened and enjoyed it so far. Also picked the Caol Ila 12 year old after doing some searching on the forum. Looked for an Ardbeg, but they did not have stock at my local store.

I've just come to realise, in a a very satisfying manner, that I am drawn to Islay single malts and prior to researching these just now, that the Laga 16, Ardbeg 10YO and Laph 10YO are among the top three rated peaty/smoky tastes that I've come to enjoy.

I bought the Laph Quarter Cask mistaking my terminology for Cask Strength (explained by my callsign) but it is bottled @ 48% !

Then I went to a tasting where my first dram was a Laga 16YO that nothing came close to bar the Ardbeg (I prolly looked like a geek taking notes) ... eventually as the night progressed it went from detailed notes & commentary about taste to "Nice", OK and "Not Nice". :D :D

So bottomline, why its satisfying? That I stumbled upon these myself, without the influence of reading or advise, via my own tastes and looky look, these ones are supposedly the top three.

It could be bottled at 55% and still not be "Cask Strength" :)

Cask Strength has to be the abv is leaves the cask at. So Talisker 57 north is 57% abv, but it's still not a "Cask Strength" whisky....nearly, but not quite

Quarter Casks are little tiny casks, whisky being put in here maximizes spirit to wood contact. They age the spirit in normal casks for around 5 years and then the QC's for 7 months (or so).

It's a clever way of getting around a common issue with peaty malts; the longer they stay in the cask the more mellow and less "peaty" they become (in general).

The end result of what Laphroaig do is a whisky which has the complexities of a much older whisky (from the wood contact) but still has the spritiness and peatiness of a young whisky.

Winner!

Hi everyone! My first post to this forum, so please excuse any breaches of etiquette.

After visiting a friend down in Virginia with an amazing whisky collection, I was inspired to expand my own cellar based on whiskies my friend that I enjoyed, and whiskies my friend didn't have that I can use to make him jealous. :P

Here's what I've bought in the past week:
Port Ellen 27 y/o (Provenance)
Ardbeg Corryvreckan
St Magdelene 29 y/o (Old Malt Cask)
Glenfarclas 40 y/o (Scotts) - bought 2 of these because of the awesome price I found at a local shop; will keep one and try to figure out a way to sell the other one I think.
Glenfarclas 40 y/o (OB) - found a great price for this one at a different local shop, but only bought one; should be interesting to compare this and the Scotts version.
Aberlour A'Bunadh
Lagavulin 16 y/o
Amrut Portonova - bought 2 of these; took me forever to find. Still trying to find a bottle of Greedy Angels.
Macallan 1973 (Scotts) - from the same shop where I found the Scotts Glenfarclas; price was so low compared to other outlets I couldn't pass it up.

Ok, now I'm broke, except for $95 that I've put aside for a bottle of the Ardbog. :D

I have had a nagging feeling that I have not had enough Whisky, so to remedy the situation I brought home some Highland Park 12 and Aberlour 12 to make things interesting.

Musky has been away for a wee bit. Did a bit of a tour of the Danube on a river boat from Budapest to Rousse, then overland to Istanbul. Missed all the flooding and kept away from Taksim square. Found this on one of my sojournes down a side street in Mohacs, Hungary. Only 14000 florints (about $70.00)

Football season is starting up again, so I had to get an Irish to drink while watching the Irish, and picked up the odd duck at the local mart.... Lombard Smoking Ember, a pure malt.

On the Laddie. Their "recent" 10 Year Old release is really really good, especially for the price. If you have not tried it recently, this release is worth a revisit and then most likely a purchase...

That would be an Ardbeg Ten, and Redbreast 12. I honestly do not know how to describe it, I am not a huge Islay fan, and possibly even less of an Ardbeg fan, but work sucked so much this week, I said I needed to get a bottle of Beg on my way home from work.
