The tasting involved;
Breize from Breton, France, blah. Sadly I own one.
Bains , South Africa, tasted like a decent bourbon to me.
Macmyra 08, Sweden, indifferent dram ... okay I called it "something unpleasant" in public, out loud.
Rittenhouse, USA - couldn't drink it, dumped it in the spittoon.
Elijah Craig USA - another one I couldn't get past my nose, ended up in spittoon too.
Crown Royal Northern Harvest - over rated not great not one of the Worlds' best by any stretch. I own two. (sigh!)
Forty Creek Canada, not bad at all, better than the Crown Royal NH albeit with a short finish, typical enjoyable Canadian rye
Bushmills Ireland, a decent dram to enjoy, but not spectacular. For that I'd go with a Powers.
Redbreast Ireland, which earned my most damning comment "indifferent at best"
Tyrconnel Ireland, an enjoyable dram which I am glad I own.
Glenfarclas 15, a nice SM medium finish which is also owned.
Glenfarclas 17, another winner medium finish, got one.
Balvenie Caribbean Cask, all good, nice medium finish, got one.
Kilchoman Machir Bay, probably the best of the evening. For my money you can't go wrong with a Kilchoman. Wish I owned one.
Laphroaig 17, another winner for me which I had just purchased the day before.
Hazel burn 12, not bad at all, another got one.
Longrow 12, again a very decent dram, again owned.
Springbank 18, was my second favourite dram of the evening. Sadly don't own yet...
There were too many drams from "away" for my liking and some that should never see the light of day in my honest opinion. I would have preferred less. Don't get me wrong, I have tried American Bourbon, Macmyra whisky and some exceptional Irish whisky, so I don't dislike them. I merely feel that there was too much spread in the whiskies offered and that it should have tightened up to fewer whiskies from only a couple of countries. I will probably just make a donation next year.
1 oz vodka
1 oz Triple Sec
1 oz lime juice
1 oz crushed ice
Pour all the ingredients into a shaker and shake vigorously for 10 seconds. Strain and pour into a martini glass. Garnish with a lime wedge.
Note: You can forego the lime.
2 oz bourbon whiskey
1 teaspoon granulated sugar
½ oz of water
3-4 mint leaves
Crushed cubes of ice
Grab a highball glass and muddle (grind) the mint, sugar and water at the bottom. Fill the glass about 3/4 full with ice, add the bourbon and then stir. For added flair, garnish with a little mint on top.
1 1/2 oz vodka
3/4 cup spicy ginger beer
1 teaspoon lime juice
A few ice cubes
Pour all ingredients into a highball glass (or better yet, the signature Moscow Mule copper cup), and stir. Slap on that lime wedge as garnish and prepare to be delighted.
I will continue with the new and savor the last of my 6 bottles of the "vintage" Lagavulin, hoping to make them last until Lagavulin comes to their senses and produces the savory goodness that one was....
