Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve... A pleasant enough whisky that, unfortunately, simply isn't terribly exciting. Certainly not a patch on the previous 18-year old Gold Label, which let more of those wonderfully complex Clynelish traits come through on the palate.

Auchentoshan 1998 Fino Sherry Cask... As it poured (no water added). A bright, lively and very nicely balanced expression of this distillery's make.

After attending a Balvenie tasting last night(12 DW, 14 CC, 17 DW, 21 PW), I run into a friend and shes down to go have whisky, so i take her to one of Chicago's best places to get whisky, The twisted spoke. half off on wednesdays!

I tried the Amrut Intermediate Sherry, and I was pleasantly surprised with how much flavor it was packed with. First experience with an Indian whiskey!

Quite different to my first experience of Indian whisky, which was more like a cross between mouthwash and petrol, it was in India and i forget the name, Red 'something'. Anyway, you will find the Amrut a consistent and well made malt whisky. They make it to similar guidelines as Scotch -- which is rare in India where one can make whisky from molasses or whatever one may find.

There may be more on the way but Amrut and Paul John are the two Indian distilleries making proper and correct whisky. Both very good indeed.

Sheep Dip direct from Scotland and a bit of Rosslyn Chapel Whisky (Tullibardine) that a buddy brought back this week. I then finished up the evening with a dram of Aged Oak Tullibardine.

It must be the oak as I drank very moderately, but woke up with a wee headache, easily brought to heel by a couple of Advil. I had the same reaction to French Limosin Oak a number of years ago.

Could it be lack of practice? I'd also suggest you didn't quite get enough water but you may be right about the oak.

Water? There's enough water put in at the distillery to thin it out to 40% !

Actually I drank several tumblers of water over the course of the evening as well as a "mithers tear" after the initial sample to open up the whisky a bit. It's either the oak or a lack of practice. I'd best figure that out within the year, eh?
