Helped a friend finish off an Aberlour 10, i really don't like this whisky, although i appreciated the fact it was a kind gesture.

For a change of pace, I had a few glasses of Brandy- some Asbach, and some Carriage House Single Barrel Apple Brandy. That was my first exposure to either of them, and was pleased with both.

Crown Royal Special Reserve... A lovely Canadian, to be sure. But its ultra-smooth style falls just short of the greater palate excitement factor offered by either the less expensive Limited Edition or the more expensive (and quite superb) Cask No. 16.

Then onto some Glenfarclas 25 Year Old.

Caol Ila 9yo 43% selected by "La Vinoteca", a Caol Ila with less peat and more, even more charcoal, bacon; a real bbq whisky :P ; this after lunch.

Springbank 10yo OB after dinner

The night before I had some Laga Distillers 4/497.

Looking down my page of notes that slowly turned to heiroglyphics amongst other things apparently I had

Karuizawa 1989 Single Cask 12YO #61.3%
Karuizawa Vintage cask 1982 # 2510 20YO 58.1%
Shirakawa 30YO
Golden Horse Chichibu 14YO 57%
Mars Single Cask 20YO 58% (not so special as apparently this barrel yielded a whopping 3 litres  )
Miyagikyou Single Cask 1989 50%

If anyone out there was there last night can you tell me if the above was any good cuz as of this moment I sure as s..t can't remember :?

Please report back, I have a couple of Batch #001 waiting for opening.

As for me, I watched the Scots win over the Springboks at rugby while making a decent dent in a bottle of Ardbeg 10. I hate to think the Springboks lost because I wasn't drinking Brandy and Coke (South Africa's national nasty mix) - so I blame it on the coach!

I dont think it is worth the $100 + I paid. Just opened it so will take time to form a certain opinion.

I think mine is an older one at 55.7%, came in green tube and had red stripe on the label. Neat it was so powerful I couldn't make much out any individual flavours, but the whole room smelled of smoke and burnt cookie dough (could only recognise the smoke if I put my nose in the glass). Will try it with water tonight.

Musky drank far too much Labatt's Blue last night. Still a bit under the weather from the efects of undistilled barley water.

Laproiag Cask Strenght with a few drops of water. The water really opened up the nose to reveal the usuall peat, kelp and iodine, but plenty more of them than the regular 10yo. There's also that burnt cookie dough I noticed without water.
The palate is much the same but with quite a bit of lemon added, seem a lot sweeter than the regular one.
The finish has all the above flavours with the addition of faint wood. Like the palate it noticably sweeter than the regular 10yo.

Attended a tasting of 7 whiskies last night at a professional acquaintance's home while simultaneously acting as the resident whisky guide. There was some method to my madness in terms of the order of presentation...

First up, Oban 1995 Distillers Edition (43%). Predictably pleasant, with the Montilla cask finishing serving to round out the malt and delay the onset of those delightfully salty seaside nuances. A fine opening salvo, all told.

Then onto The Macallan 18 Year Old Fine Oak (43%). Sumptuous to a degree, but not nearly so much so as the traditional all-Sherry cask bottling. A certain sharpness to it also, which seemed (as one person pointed out) to display a note of acetone. Would never peg this one as an 18-year old if it were served blind. It seemed much younger. Pleasurable enough for all that, with an uplifted fruitiness throughout.

Glenlivet Archive 21 Year Old (older release with the dark blue label) (43%). Simply beautiful, with the effect of those Sherry cask aged distillates offering up a plush, yet not at all over the top, palate presentation. A class act.

Glenfarclas 25 Year Old (43%). Liquid gold. The initial smoothness momentarily deceives one into thinking that it's going down just too easily. Then, those deeper, more robust notes of wood-matured fruit and spirit emerge and tease the back of the throat. This one actually made the Macallan seem somewhat crude. Great value, too.

Aberlour a'bunadh Batch No. 27 (60.1%). A Sherry bomb as expected. Consumed most of the glass as it poured from the bottle, only adding two minute drops of water later on to open it up a little more.

Highland Park Old Malt Cask 26 Year Old, Distilled 1983 (50%). From a single Sherry butt. Perhaps not quite the breadth of underlying subtleties that the more venerable official distillery releases can display. But with something as delicious in and of itself as this, who really cares? Everyone loved it.

Nikka Whisky From The Barrel (51.4%). My very first encounter with this lovely blend. First impressions revolved around the slightly perfumed fragrance. What exactly was I smelling? Very complex nose. Absolutely shocked by my initial sips. Wow! Just a fabulous whisky, with the sweet grains and ex-Bourbon oak melding together in a perfect tango of flavours as the malt slowly creeped up from beneath. Need to procure some more of this one.

Great tasting spree, all told. Great company and food as well. No ill-effects the morning after, either, which is a testament to both proper hydration throughout the course of the evening and to the quality of the spirits.
