This weekend I cracked the Port Ellen 7th. The same excellent complexity I remember from the 6th release. Peat, diesel and an underlying sweetness. I still need to look up my comments on the 6th release again, but the diesel notes seem to separate the two.

A party yesterday afternoon, some of this and some of that but the stand out was the Aberlour single cask I bottlesd at the distillery in 2003, cask #13330 filler 1989 bottled in 2003. Huge sherry monster with spice and more sherry just for fun.

I've found that Ardbeg 10 can benefit from the bottle being opened for a while, it seems to help.

I have a small article/poster on Ardbeg 10 on whiskyfun currently...........

Great poster there Lawrence! I didn't think Ardbeg needed a bit of time, but I think you're right, and it's been some time since I've opened a bottle so I'm a bit rusty.

Stayed at my friends' last night so I had: G&T, Amaretto, a little bit of the bottled beer that the menfolk were drinking, Sheepdip 40% (good), Glendronach 1990 46% Murray McDavid, Linkwood 1990 46% Murry McDavid (absolutely awful), OMC Port Ellen 25yo 50%(lovely), Talisker 10. A good night :D

Tried a Virginia Gentlemen which i got from Wright wines and whisky the other day. Not what i expected, i had it over ice. Don't know if that was the correct thing to do bt i did. I found it very sour and took an instant dislike to it. Perhaps too many jd's and jim beam's rsulting in me expecting it to be sweet, however i left it for a bit while the ice disolved and found that it became rather pleasant, however it won't be the usual tipple of choice, it was all part of the learning process.

If i did wrong with the ice, let me know how one should drink it.

One should drink it the way one likes too. But when tasting for the first time it's best, I think, to taste it sans water or ice, and in the proper glass too. Then experiment with water, ice, and whatever else suits your fancy!!

I opened a bottle of glenlivet-nadura. The first taste I can taste more alcohol than malt so I added one ice, let it melt a bit and taste again. This time it tasted better and better. I asked my wife to take a sip and she likes it. There is a malty taste to it that I like. The next dram is without ice and this time its as good.

Sounds like a great whisky there! The only Clan Denny I tasted was a few years back in a Douglas Laing masterclass with Stewart, a 40y Dumbarton Single Grain, incredible whisky, a true surprise, and my introduction to Single Grain whisky!

Ardbeg Very Old 30yrs.

I have wanted to try this one for a long time, bet never had the chance.

So, when I arrived home late last night / early this morning I indulged in what turned out to be a wonderful whisky.

Colour: Luxurious toffee and golden honey.
Nose: This was my first big surprise, it's an Ardbeg so I expected to be smacked in the face by the smoke, peat and sea air.

NO! Hardly a hint.

In fact, it took me quite a few minutes just to get into the nose which turned out to be sweet, rich, fruity and eventually, showing traces of orange and lime.
Is this really an Ardbeg?
I am sure it is, but wonderfully different.

Palate: That smooth luxury of the nose continued into the taste. Lots of smooth luxury, apricot, peach and a long-lasting fruity tingle right down the middle of the tongue.

Summary: This was a very different Ardbeg experience. I have tasted many Ardbegs, including the Kildalton (which so far has been one of my two favourites), the other favourite being the old map label 1974-1996 G&M CC.
This one is much older and much more luxurious. Those smooth rich apricot and peach flavours were phenominal and this is now my No. 1 Ardbeg so far.

Gorgeous, very different, but wonderful.

Aberlour 12 yrs old. Last week a had a dram but was not impressed. Last night, almost magical, it tasted much different. This time, there was depth and strength and I like it very much.

Great to hear about your nice Ardbeg Very Old 30yrs experience Malt-Teaser. I'm enjoying smelling the empty glass from last night's Ardbeg Ten. A little green and prickly, and not as much vanilla or malt that it sometimes also has the next day.

I had an Ardmore, Followed by Compass Box Peat Monster. I do like what Compass box is doing with it's whiskies. The smokiness tinged with the sweetness of fruit is a very pleasant combination.

Hi Willie yes it was. I got it when it was on offer at an introductory price of £14.99. I purloined 2 of the aforesaid bottles.

Something interesting I found at Sainsburys - A 15 year old speyside own brand finished in a cognac barrel, cheap and very interesting. Nutty, intense but not overpowering, but a bit of an aftertaste which I'm not sure if I like or not. Anyone else tried this....? It made the Dalmore I followed it with seem very tame....

A few of the George T. Stagg's Fall 2004 bottling. I was very surprised to wake this morning and find the left glasses on the side of the sink still there, thought they'd melt with the drop at the bottom!!

A few drams here and there but, as always, I was impressed by the Famous Grouse 12yo (vatted malt). It's a great dram and largely ignored by many to their loss.

Out for tapas, I was sticking with red wine until the after-dinner drinks menu offered a Macallan 18yo. Honeyed loveliness, made me all cosy and snug.
