Last night I opened a Berry Brother & Rudd "Own Selection" Linkwood 1993.It was bottled in 2008 at a cask strength of 56.8% from cask 1612. I sampled it in a Glencairn.
The colour is no darker than Straw and is no more than medium bodied. Good "legs" developed as I tilted the glass. The consistency was just a little viscous.
A full on fruit sensation as it hit the nose - a distinctive and powerful green apple smell dominated, and tingles from the strong alcohol content prevented too much more from coming through.
I watered it a touch in an attempt to get past the apples and I was so glad that I did.
This whisky is non-chill filtered and the pale straw colour was lost in an almost grey haze. However, not to be put off, I re-examined.
There was still the powerful apple smell albeit a little mellower with a softer ripeness, and then a distinct waft of ripe pears and just a little oak with a trace of maltiness in the background.
The fruits dominated the palate although as I slowly drained the glass, interestingly a little Elastoplast and Germolene crept in towards the finish.
The finish was not long but satisfying and the watered whisky became very refreshing. (It is sharp and hot at full strength, I tried it.)
All in all I thought this was a good whisky bearing in mind it was a snip at £35 direct from BBR's London shop on James Street.
Old Pulteney 1991 15 y.o. 54,9% CS and
Bowmore 8 y.o. Adelphi 59,9% yesterday.
The Pulteney convinced me right away. The Bowmore seemed a little youngish and unpleasent at first and his is why I left the bottle open over night. After this breathing the malt improoved greatly, so my diaappointent didn't last long.
I am convinced i can still taste it today.
I must be boring people today about it as all i can do is talk about it.
Its just so turfy and smokey. Yum Yum.
I was going to save my next dram until Saturday but I might have a dram tonight. I must learn to go easy on it though, I promised myself i would try and build a collection.
