Here's all you need to know...
- The value of the WMI is calculated monthly on the 25 most traded brands/distilleries at auction during the past 12 calendar months.
- The WMI was benchmarked at 100 on the basis of auction sales in 2007 from established auction houses with expertise in specialist whisky auctions around the world including McTear's, Bonham's, Thainstone's, Christie's and Sotheby's but not unverifiable online auction websites.
- All single malt or single grain bottlings from Scotland are eligible for inclusion in any container measuring 50cl or more (there are insufficient volumes of Irish, American, Japanese or World whiskies at auction to form their own meaningful index).
- Hammer prices are used for the WMI which are exclusive of local taxes and buyer's premiums as these vary around the world and between individual auction houses.
- Distilleries producing several different malts are amalgamated into one listing on the WMI (e.g. Bruichladdich or Springbank).
- Where auction lots contain multiple bottles, each bottle is judged to be worth an equal share of the hammer price.
- The brands are ranked according to a combination of volume sold and value achieved. Brands can move up the rankings by achieving higher prices or successfully selling more bottles than neighbouring distilleries. Rankings change as a net result of new auctions and the expiration of old results that are now more than 12 months old.
- Percentage changes in average prices are also published in each edition of Whisky Magazine and provide a guide to the performance of that brand since the last edition. A brand can move up the rankings but still show a fall in average price if there has been a large sale of bottles selling for below average prices.
