It appears that distilleries like Scapa and Deanston use unpeated malt and any peat detected originates from the water supply.
I agree to look upon Arran.

The web site of Johannes van den Heuvel is very useful to approach single malt whiskies.
I disagree with the critics when they don't see a clear difference of quality between the single malts and the more commercial blended.

Laphroaig Quarter Cask matured about five years in normal 200 litres casks, and then was transferred for nearly a year in quarter casks (volume of about 100 litres) to accelerate the maturation. If you know and like other peated whiskies I suggest you QC, otherwise it’s better to begin with 10 yo an...

The price depends where you live; in general Laphroaig (10 yo and Quarter Cask), Glenfarclas 10 yo, Dalmore 12 yo, Glenlivet 12 yo, Glen Grant 5 yo, Tamdhu NAS are some bottles having better quality/price ratio.

Rosebank 1990 40% Gordon & MacPhail (Connoiseurs Choice), very very nice:
Nose: lemon, vanilla, a hint of sherry and honey.
Body: medium (a surprise, I thought it lighter)
Taste: grassy, cocoa, spicy
Finish: medium, with nutty notes
81/100

I agree with the suggestion about the pubs; besides it is right the choice of a very peated brand (Laphroaig 10 yo is less expensive than Ardbeg 10 yo) and I’d add a sherried whisky (for the quality/price ratio I think to Dalmore, Glenfarclas, Aberlour).
