The problem is that Gibson's 18yr atthe LCBO is now ~$65 for a bottle. For that kind of coin, I'll pass...

Re: I hope this isn't a stupid question...

I have a question, hope someone can answer. I heard a rumour that most blended whiskies contain only about 3% Ilay malt. Is that true? There was a quote in DB's Whisky Handbook - something along the lines of "1% Isay malt in a bottle of blended whisky is the norm. 2% Islay malt in a bottle mea...

Re: Dave Broom coming to Toronto??

Hi Peter:

I was sorry not to have taken more time to talk with you about common interests - whisky and cigars. The format of the evening wasn't exactly condusive to leisurely conversation so hopefully our mutual friend might be willing to set up a meeting sometime in the convenient future?

Re: What are you drinking now?

I enjoy the 12yo much more now but there isn't any more 12yo in stock so I'll have to decide, to buy the 10yo or not? I'm still hoping Suntory is successful in bringing the Yamasaki into the LCBO this Christmas; time will tell. Harry For the coin, I'd go for the D. Laing 10yr CI at equal price with...

Re: What did you drink last night?

Some Laphraoig QC last night. ...and some Sotol (Sotol Hacienda de Chihuahua Plata). Hi Bamber: The Sotol is something unique - a regional variation of mezcal. I commend you for trying this, but there is no connection to whisky with this (I'm sure you know this). Plata is often used inter...

Re: What did you drink last night?

My brother in law when I offered him a drink said "as long as its not any younger than 15 years old". We had a Glenmo 15. What a fantastic dram. I should have discovered this a long time ago. Followed by a Balvenie 1993 Port Wood. A good evening all in all. :) Very interesting. The Glenmo...

it's late and things are blurry but I'm not actually sure what you mean by 'session drams'. By session dram I meant something you could have a bit of a (drinking) session with. For me, that would be Te Bheag, 8yr Sheep Dip, or Grant's Ale or Sherry cask. Perhaps Jim Beam Black. JWB would do in a pi...

Just about to pour a DTC 12yo Auld Reekie Islay 46%. Harry The price on this one went down to $70 at Summerhill I think! I know, apparently I should wait to buy all my whisky. I bought that and the 15yo Glenmo at full price :( The Diageo 25yos are reasonably priced now (25yo Tali $250, 25yo CI and ...

Hey buddy, are you sure that is your opinion? Perhaps you should distinguish between what is your opinion, and what is fact. For instance, IN MY OPINION. you statement of the price is not an OPINION, but in fact (in my opinion) is a fact. Your opinion, in my opinion, was about the "good...

Lets hope the LCBO doesn't read the forum, eh Frodo? ;) Actually the stores seem to be run differently depending on the manager. Some stores have significant manager's sales all the time, and some hang onto old stock for what seems like forever. Today - The last gasp of a 1980's bottle of Crown Roy...

You may be right Harry. From an exhibitor booth position, the goal is probably to expose potential custumers to what is available (from their company) at the LCBO.

Would be interesting so see when the 3 TBA masterclasses get finalized as this will determine if I am going.

Interesting day today. Had my second dram of Glenmorangie 15 today. :yuk: :yuk: :yuk: Took it to the Summerhill LCBO minus 3+1/2 oz missing from the bottle. Told the sales lady I couldn't drink it. Not the largest perhaps, Frodo - but high quality! How do you like the Bookers? Hi Jan: 1) More quality bottlings (depending on your definition of the term) because I decided to stockpile against the upcoming "boom" prices. Will always be able to afford that Grant's Ale Cask or the JWB. M...

I've seen something like these limited releases from Glengoyne at similarly outragious prices. As long as the regular OB lines are unaffected I join Mr. TH in not caring. I will say it's a shame though as I was considering ordering a bottle until I saw the prices. Then I just sat back and laughed.

Opened a new bottle - Glenmorangie 15 OB. On it's own merits, I like the dram. I am dissapointed that the distillery flavours are somewhat disguised by the new oak finish. Too bad about that.

I would say depends how much money you have. This stuff is scarce thus the price. In a few years, there will be more PC on the shelves I think with the corresponding price drop (I hope). Having said that, there is a new Port Charlotte distillery that will open up in a while if it hasn't already. The...

Curious about the "Guardian" tag on names

Just curious here. I've noticed that on the profile section where the poster's handle is, some posters have "Guardian of Glenlevit", but there do not seem to be any others such as Friends of Laphroaig, Maker's Mark Ambassador, or Canadian Club Comrade. Is there a reason why other affiliati...

Good point on the Crown Royal SR, Frodo. I agree...it's a lovely whisky, but for the price... Crown Royal put out a limited edition 15yr old that was about $10 more than the regular NAS expression. I have to admit that the romance of the Crown Royal XR is alluring to me, but at $150/fifth, I haven't yet indulged. The reviews on it have seemed to be a bit lacking for this whisky for the price. Gibson's Rare, a 18-year-old Canadian whisky is the best one I've tried: I would drink straight like a scotch. Cam has also identified this expression as something worth trying. I would also have to recommend Highland Park 18. I think it truly is an amazing whisky. However, I have not tried the HP 25 and most people would argue that it is a big step over the 18. That would have to be a very big step as the 18yr HP is considered (and rightfully so) to be a sterling dram by ...
