Re: Supermarket Deals

That was depressing. I rushed off to my local Tesco, just on the off chance, and they had no deals at all, other than Bowmore Legend at £18.

Re: Supermarket Deals

I got a Bowmore 15yo Darkest for £27, an a'bunadh for £25 and a Jura Superstition for £23 at Waitrose yesterday. I may have to go back for the Dalwhinnie, which was under £20.

Yes, and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. You know it can't logically taste slightly effervescent, but bizarrely it does anyway!

My suggestion is the Aberlour 18, which I find so much better than Macallans of a similar price that it's almost embarrassing.

RIP Bowmore Dusk

I think I'm just about ready to concede defeat and recognise that I'm not going to be able to find any more bottles of this, one of my absolute favourite whiskies. I polished off the last of my existing bottle on Saturday, but now I need to find something similar tasting, but not too toe-curlingly e...

Belated thanks! It was a good haul, Glenmorangie Astar, Dalmore Gran Reserva and a Tomintoul 16. I treated myself to a new a'bunadh, as I have been especially good.

My favourite, somewhat to my surprise, wasn't one of the really old and rare drams, but Aberlour 18. I had to go and buy a bottle at TWE. Lovely.

Re: Ardbeg 10 Year Old

Ardbeg was the very first single malt I tried (I refuse to count the old Glenfiddich) and I was a devoted fan for years. Since I started to become a real enthusiast, a fair few others have overtaken it, including Lagavulin amongst the Islays, but I always keep a bottle or two in stock. That said, I ...

I like all four, but for me it has to be Lagavulin by a short head from Ardbeg, with Laphroaig some distance behind and then a similarly large gap to Talisker.

Re: Repeat Purchase Percentage

I said 40 to 60%. I love to try new whiskies, but I get very twitchy if I haven't got an a'bunadh, Ardbeg 10, Lagavulin 16, Laphroaig QC, a Caol Ila 12 and a Talisker 10 at all times. I also repeatedly go back to whiskies I've not been back to for a while and didn't quite get, to see if my opinions ...

I'm sure you all know this already, but Waitrose have further dropped the price of a'bunadh to £22.99. That's practically criminal, but post-Christmas personal credit crunch or no, I had to buy a couple of bottles at that price.

Re: What's Gotten Into Balvenie?

I'll say one thing about Balvenie - their packaging is all far too similar and it is sometimes difficult to work out what's what from a distance in a store if you can't get right up and press your nose against them. When I picked up a 21yo Portwood for the cost of a Doublewood, I gave a great big v...

I haven't had much in the way of 21yo whisky, but I really enoyed the Glen Garioch, which is pretty reasonably priced. Cost me about £56, if I remember correctly. I heartily endorse the Balnevie suggestion, too.

My job is safe for the foreseeable future and I have no debts, so I anticipate continuing to buy the same, possibly more if prices start to come down. I can't see the distilleries' expected price rises happening in the current climate; a price war seems more likely to me. I also wonder if any distil...
