Re: Johnnie Walker Red

I think JW Red is OK for what it is. It is $25 a bottle, and most people will drink it in a mixed drink, maybe on the rocks. It is too sweet for me to drink neat. JW Black is nice neat or on the rocks. and fairly priced. I think the Gold and Blue are overpriced. Green Label is good, but for me price...

Re: Cadenhead Classic Highland Pure Malt?

Discontinued, huh? That explains why I am getting $20 off. It is a little on the hot side neat, but I like that. Just like I prefer 95-120 proof bourbons and ryes.

Cadenhead Classic Highland Pure Malt?

Has anyone here had a Vatted Malt called Cadenhead's Classic Highland Pure Malt? It has no caramel added, and no chill-filtering and is bottled at 50% ABV. I got it on sale for $39.99. After tasting it, it may be a vatting but a huge portion of it has to be Highland Park. It taste pretty similar to ...

Re: Your top 5 bang for your buck whiskys

I am going to have to include some American whiskey since I have really started to gravitate that way (pure economics).

Talisker 10--$58
Highland Park 12--$42
Laphroaig Cask Strength--$48
Springbank 10--$55
Wild Turkey 101--$20

Re: Favorite lower end Ryes?

I imagine I will still stick with WT and RR ryes, but it was interesting to note that Serge over at Whiskyfun gave Old Overholt a decent review. Scored a 79. I would be willing to bet that at least in the U.S. (I have no idea how much Old Overholt would cost in Europe) that's the lowest priced whisk...

Re: Some Bourbon Xmas gifts..

Black Maple Hill is another one of those strange things about American whiskey where a company has someone else distill the product. I think this is distilled by Heaven Hill and is rumored to be about 7-8 years. It is bottled by the BMH folks, owned by CVI Brands. At Spec's in Houston it runs about ...

Some Bourbon Xmas gifts..

I was fortunate enough to get three nice bourbons from my wife and her family for Xmas. George T. Stagg 2010 release (NAS, but I believe it is 17 yo).. 144 proof, and believe it or not only a small amount of burn on the way down. I find that to get ride of that small burn, one small ice cube does th...

OGD BIB vs. OGD 114

I am enjoying my first bottle of Old Grand Dad 114 here lately..the first OGD I have had. Love the stuff! I was just wondering if the OGD 114 is the OGD BIB bottled at 114 proof, or is it aged longer than the 4 years of the BIB. I have not had the BIB yet.

Re: New To Whisky, Please Please Please Help...

My wife was a newbie to any type of spirits taken neat. But while she found HP 12 OK, she absolutely loves Springbank 10. It is slightly peaty, but also lemony, buttery, and very smooth. I think that would be a great starting point. HP12, Tomatin 12 are also good starting points. I would consider th...

I don't know why I haven't been around..a lot of time on a competing mags board I guess. Spec's just can't be beat. The main Downtown Spec's will blow you away with their selection. I have been away from the forum for a bit..but now that I am back my new rediscovered whiskeys..bourbon and rye! (Talisker and Laphroaig still top my list, though). Re: G&M Highland Park 1994 CS Refill Sherry

I will be in Australia next month, but maybe I will pick up a bottle of HP 12 at duty free and join y'all from the hotel.

I was thinking that maybe the distillate in 1994 was slightly different than 1995..then again maybe that one extra year helped as well.

Re: G&M Highland Park 1994 CS Refill Sherry

Keep in mind I have never had anything older than the 18. The 18 is one of my favs for sure, and it took darn near 3/4 of this bottle (over 2 months of course) to decide I like it better than the 18.

Springbank 12 year Fino Sherry Cask

It's a cask strength (56%), I drank this neat..no need for water. Finish: ...

Single malts in San Francisco airport bars?

I am going to have a 7+ hour layover at the San Francisco airport (going out international) in a week or so. I don't normally drink anything at an airport, but thought with the long layover I would see if I could get a decent single malt at a bar. Anyone know of such a place in the SFO airport?

TIA

I am a big fan of WT Rye 101, so I thought I would give the Russell's Reserve Rye a try. It's a 90 proof, 6-year, small batch rye by Jimmy Russell the WT Master Distiller. All I can say is fantastic! Nose: Mildly spicy rye nose, vanilla, and fruit (bananas and pineapple) Taste: Very, very smooth, no...

Springbank 12 year Fino Cream Sherry Finish?

My wife and I have become big Springbank 10 year fans, so I talked her into trying the Springbank 12 year Fino Cream Sherry Finish. She likes it, but not as much as the standard 10 year. I like it better than heard and it's a tough call as to which I prefer. The sherry really seems to compliment the...
