Re: Way to go Diageo

For me it's just another recent example of the Diageo marketing department getting it very wrong.
Nice attempt to balance it all out with the promise of donations though.......
It's a shame that the model for big business like Diageo seems to be - if it's not explicitly illegal then let's do it.

Re: HtH DM pt 6

I can't vote because I think they are both fantastic whiskies it's just a shame they aren't bottled at 46%+ and free of chill-filtration and caramel. Both are up there for top quality affordable whiskies along with Strath 12.

Re: Recommendations on Laphroaig

I don't understand exactly what you're after Chef! but of the Laph's i've enjoyed i'd go for 43% bottlings of the 10, the CS, QC and Douglas Laing sherry matured bottlings bottled prior to 2006. The Cairdeas 12 is also great but a little different.

Re: traditional oak whisky cask

Glenmorangie have also experimented with virgin oak, as for "traditional oak whisky casks", well that's just marketing bs. Traditional oak casks could be anything including bastard casks that contain both American and Spanish oaks. Not sure about the re-charring of bourbon casks but I thin...

I'd say it's worth purchasing so you can see if you like any of them. To my surprise I didn't so it was a much better investment than a 700ml bottle of each.

Re: Anyone notice a change in recent Lahproaig 10?

I also noticed the last bottle of Laph 10 (and Laph in general) becoming more smoky and ashy. Unfortunately the trade off seems to be less iodine and maratime flavours. I do welcome the reduction in sweetness though. The berries in the Cairdeas is fab too.

I opened a bottle a few weks go and I find that it has faded significantly (though it is stilll quite potent) over the past few weeks. Re: Do you like inconsistency between batches?

I prefer the variety of batches as long as the quality is consistent. All whiskies vary from batch to batch anyway so having identifiable batch numbers just allows people to re-purchase bottles from batches they enjoy.

Re: single/double/triple malt

I think the real question is what happens when a super distillery opens. Say it produces a number of different brands from the one location, if these are blended is it still a single malt?
Based on Bruichladdich 3D3 i'd say it is at the moment but I wonder if this shouldn't be tightened up?

Re: Lagavulin 21. Disappointing?

Hi BM, have you considered saving some of the Laga 21 to try in a year or two's time (in an appropriately sized bottle to avoid oxidisation)? It would be interesting to see what your impressions are once your palate develops further. There are a few whiskies I wish I had saved a sample of to try aga...

I think they can use the term single as Bruichladdich have done for both their 3D and Infinity series which mixed Bruichladdich and Port Charlotte.
