Re: What did you drink last night?

First was an old grain whisky - North of Scotland 39yo 'Clan Denny' by Douglas Laing.
Second was a sample of a smoky Irish whiskey that will shortly be released - Connemara Sherry Finish from their new Small Batch Collection.

Both very good - read our full reviews on the Whisky For Everyone blog.

Just tried a sample of Grant's Family Reserve - one of the world's best selling blends and not too bad. Pretty enjoyable stuff.

Re: What are you drinking now?

Hankey Bannister - a pretty decent and enjoyable blend that is a bit of a bargain at around £15 a bottle. Very easy drinking straight or equally pleasant mixed with some tonic or soda water.

Balblair 1989 - very good and complex whisky from a much under rated distillery ... and a bargain at about £40 a bottle.

Re: What are you drinking now?

Have just tried a sample of Double Barrel - a new vatted malt from Douglas Laing. They have taken just one cask of Macallan and one of Laphroaig and vatted them together. Interesting stuff. Read the full review on our blog below.

Re: What did you drink last night?

Some Spanish single malt (yes, you read that correctly .... Spanish!) that we picked up in Spain (unsurprisingly) recently. Was called DYC Pure Malt and was light, refreshing and not too bad. Much better than expected! The full review is on the Whisky For Everyone blog - address below.

Re: What did you drink last night?

Wasn't technically last night but have just returned from Spain where we tried two top selling blends. Full reviews are on our blog but here is a quick summary ... Vat 69 - not great, light and quite spirity but better with a mixer. Dimple 15 years old - rich, sweet, lots of sherry influence, a bit ...

Re: What are you drinking now?

Glencadam 15 years old - a strange one. Very nice pungent nose, then flat on the palate before rising again to a nice fresh dry finish. Could be great if they sort out the middle/palate. Read my review at the blog address below.

Re: What is your most recent (whisky) purchase.

Gentleman Jack - picked it up for £17 for a litre in Duty Free and its about £40 in UK shops. Bargain price and pretty good stuff, much better and more complex than the regular No.7.

Re: What are you drinking now?

Glen Scotia 15 yo 'Old Malt Cask' by Douglas Laing - lovely combo of sherry cask and light, earthy smoke from this little known/under rated distillery. Very nice stuff and would be great with a mild cigar.

Some J&B Rare - nice, light and fresh. Not too bad at all, would be great on a stinking hot day or with a mixer/cocktail. Have posted a bit of info and some interesting facts on my blog entry about it.

Re: What is your most recent (whisky) purchase.

Glenmorangie Sonnalta - great whisky that is part matured in Pedro Ximinez sherry casks, only available in Duty Free/travel retail. Exceptionally good and complex, especially with a tiny bit of water. Got my bottle for around £70 for a litre.

Re: What are you drinking now?

Just tried the new Hibiki 12 yo - very good, lots of freshness and you get lots of the plums from those plum liqueur casks that it has been part matured in. Quite unlike anything that I have tried for a long time. Also tried the fairly new Glendronach 18 - lovely and rich with a good, balanced sherr...

Had a dram each of Glenmorangie Original and Glenfiddich 12 yo - two under rated drams I think. They sell loads but don't get much recognition for their quality.

An Arran with a Sassacaia wine finish - very interesting with lots of red fruits, but also lots of dry, tannic woodiness.

Caol Ila 28 years old from Douglas Laing's Old & Rare range - excellent stuff, tried at a tasting at The Whisky Shop in London. Quite light and fresh with a lovely damp earth smokiness. Very good with water. Well worth a try if you can get one of the 261 bottles!

The regular Black Bottle. Its not as smoky as you would expect considering it contains whisky from 7 different Islay distilleries, but is quite light and refreshing. One of the best smoky blends that I have tried to date.
