Re: Unsold bottles at recent auctions

I was at the auction and from memory most of the unsold lots were poor lots that wouldn't appeal in general. Add in the fact that the weather forecast for that day was 6 inches of snow (which never arrived) which put off a lot of people - the auctioneers reckoned they got a lot of pre-auction bids f...

Re: Ardbeg 10 bar code

There are a few other threads relating to this topic. Regarding the Batch code (Date/Timestamp string) I think the following applies: First Part is Bottling Year: L4 - 2004 L5 - 2005 etc Second Part is day of year (3 characters) Third Part is timestamp (4 characters) Fourth part is part of the post ...

I'd put Isle of Skye 8 Year old in the mix as well. And would add my voice to the Black Bottle brigade too.

I agree with Nick

Trying to divide any product into groups is bound to be impossible and lead to more and more meaningless groupings - just look at the music industry.

The whisky ones, IMHO, are best used for geography and not to lead my taste buds.

Not sure if this will be of help but I found the following: http://www.bakeryhilldistillery.com.au/ They might be able to do you a private tour or a tailored course. There are others in Oz but I thought that might be closest. See http://www.maltmaniacs.org/ADHD/lexicon.html#W-Austra for others

This is from the last Ebay listing: An extremely rare limited bottling of Highland Park 12 year old to celebrate the legend that is Magnus Eunson, infamous with the birth of Highland Park Distillery. I don't have details of how many bottles were produced but this bottle is number 065, also signed by...

My neighbour reckons there was a cask which was bottled for the German market labelled as Glenfarclas QC but which wasn't meant to be - they even labelled the bottle with the incorrect cask number.

He doesn't remember which cask though.

$9000 would be way off - at the last McTears auction you could have bought 3 OB 1946 Select Reserve 52 year olds for that money.

Re: Valuation

Last auction at McTears was £1800 for the 1948 and £1100-1300 for the 1946 (there were 4 bottles hence the range). Don't forget you would have to remove 15%+vat for the commission to calculate what you would receive.

I have to say that my hip flask tends to get used on occasions where I am not really too worried about taste but more worried about warming the body - for instance, sitting at Murrayfield on the occasion of the first 6 Nations match. So I can't comment on the taste issue. As for cleaning it out - I ...

I have a sneaking suspicion that this was a slightly unofficial bottling that was never meant to be labelled as Glenfarclas. I remember my neighbour, a blender, mentioning something about this so I'll try and find out some details from him.

Not change the taste - what a load of rubbish. They may be able to blend any differences to the same final flavour but it has to affect the maturation taste as the flavour concentrations will differ from an un-wrapped cask. I wonder if they have really tried this over a 10 year trial. If it was a sh...

A lot of folk that collect bottles also use a product called parafilm-M which is used by labs to seal containers. Just google it and you should find loads of links.
