The vatting is conducted at the bottling hall. For most whiskies the final reduction water will be local to the bottling hall.

Tap water? At least it should be filtered but not run through activated carbon.

Re: Johnnie Walker help :)

The age of whisky is determine from the date it is bottled minus the date it is distilled. After putting it in the bottle, the "age" does not increase. In other words, if your JW Red has been sitting on the shelf for 20 years, it is not really 20 years old. As for blended whiskies, it is c...

I read somewhere that cask strength single malt whisky is diluted with water to the final %abv which is around 46% or so. I like to know what water is use but this maybe a guarded secret. Could it be from the spring water nearby? As for the best cask strength whisky, I like Arran, very potent so one...

I watched the first episode but did not pick up on the single malt. Two drinks that I desire to have is Octomore and Petrus. Oct is not available in the USA. And I know that Petrus is a very very expensive wine. It ranges from somewhere around $2000 to about $150,000 per bottle. Way way too much for...

Tom Selleck made a series of movies as Jesse Stone, a policeman working in a small town called Paradise. He buys a bottle of JW Red, perhaps everyday and brings it home in a brown paper bag. He lives by himeself with a quiet dog. Must really be paradise!

I have a hydrometer that measures the alcohol content. I can put whisky on a tall glass (hydrometer is long), put the hydrometer in there and record the reading every 10 minutes. But it will be a waste of whisky. :D

What interest me is the size of the bottle at 4.5 liters. I have a similar bottle of Ardbeg and that would match perfectly. But for 2000, I will pass.

Thanks LeoDLion. If I was bringing back only one bottle, it would make more sense to grab a 1 liter bottle. As far as I know, all the bottles I'm bringing back were/are not available at one liter. You are correct about what is allowed in one's carry-on bag. I would not buy any whisky in duty free R...

A person is allowed 1-liter bottle of liquor without paying custom duty. I suggest to get a 1-liter instead of 700 cl. When I bring up to three bottles I don't bother declaring it. If you are caught, you just have to pay the tax on it but in many trips, I have never been questioned. But then the mos...

We were on a cruise to the Yucatan last Nov. In Cozumel, I bought two bottles of Laphroiag and Glenlivet at the duty free store. I thought the price is pretty good. Don't forget to buy Kahlua. Its an interesting question. My guess is that the supply of bourbon casks from the US is greater than the number of those use for scotch maturation. Otherwise if this is the other way around, the price of bourbon cask will skyrocket and we will hear about it. The other thing to consider is what will...

Re: MAKING YOUR OWN WHISKEY FROM 1000 OAKS BARREL CO.

I have the suspicion for a while that the alcohol level of my whisky that is maturing from 5-liter oak barrels have gone down. I bought a hydrometer and measured it. I got 50 proof which is 25% abv. The original whisky was at 80 proof or 40% abv. I lost 15% of the alcohol in 5 months! Perhaps the ho...

Many years ago when I was initially venturing into single malt whiskey, my friend bought a bottle of Laphroiag. It was the most vile drink I ever had. It tasted of turpentine. So we put the bottle aside and drink another one. My friend gave it to me. I had a drum everyday. By Friday, this awful stuf...
