Re: Another 101... Yes, really.

Hi, I'd certainly be happy to sign some books if we can arrange to meet somewhere. I live near Worcester but get to London frequently if that helps. I only wrote part of that book for Famous Grouse, but it was fun. I'm very happy with the new 101 Legendary Whiskies though - I think it is the best of...

Another 101... Yes, really.

Hi Forgive the frightful self-promotion (gotta put food on the table I'm afraid) but I thought you all might like to know there's another 101 Whiskies book on the way. Yes, another one. This is 101 Legendary Whiskies. It was the best fun to do; I genuinely think it might be the best of the trilogy a...

New Book! New Book! Roll up! Roll up!

New book (just in time for that major gift-giving festival that unites families) - The Science & Commerce of Whisky - I did the 'commerce' bit, co-author Professor Paul Hughes did the 'science'. Published by The Royal Society of Chemistry. Available on Amazon (naturally) http://www.amazon.co.uk/...

Late November (if we get the proofs back in time :) )
Quite a technical book; lots of science from co-author Prof. Paul Hughes and not many pretty pictures!

reprinting Barnard's Pattison & Glenfarclas pamphlet

You've probably heard it elsewhere but just in case, I am re-printing a facsimile of Alfred Barnard's very, very rare 80+ page pamphlet on Pattisons and Glenfarclas. Just 100 copies; only a very few left. £35 to UK; £40 internationally. Email me or reply here for details if you want to buy! Thanks. ...

Re: 1st edition Barnard

Something over £2,000 + commission seems to be about right now for a decent 1st edition Barnard, depending of course on condition.
The one sold in Glasgow was well worth £2k in my view but badly catalogued and in the wrong auction so ended up a bargain.

1st edition Barnard

A nice 1st edition of Alfred Barnard's Distilleries of the United Kingdom just sold today (Saturday 17 March) in Glasgow for £520 + buyer's premium. It was badly catalogued and in totally the wrong auction but a few folk spotted it and there was keen phone bidding. But you need to be in the room to ...

It hasn't been out very long but there are already some positive reviews on the book's amazon.co.uk page (good deal there btw) and on the whiskymag.com forum.

Which is a relief!

It's not cheap, that's for sure, but it's an heirloom! We were asked to make this very special to acknowledge that this is a very special and important whisky book - see the other comments above. Given its rarity and importance the 'standard' reprint is great value, though I accept it's something of...

Hi This is a really nice little book and deserved to be better promoted by Grants. I was asked to write 2 pieces for it, which I enjoyed, though I don't know how they selected the writers. So far as I know all the pieces are original and have never appeared anywhere else (certainly true for my two)....

Of course, you could just take your standard copy to any decent bookbinder (check on line or Yellow Pages) and have it bound it your choice and colour of leather for less than £150.

Just a thought.

Re: Barnard - 1st edition for sale - shocking price!

I met the buyer of the German copy. It has gone to a good home, where it will be properly looked after. The expensive one at Lyon & Turnbull did not sell. Either the reserve was too high or no-one bid. Interesting. Suggests the current ceiling for a top-quality Barnard is around £2,500 right now.

Ah, thank you.
We (not very modestly) think it's the best yet. And great value.
OK, it's £99 + shipping (you would have saved £20 if you'd pre-ordered) but rarer than hen's teeth and highly sought after.
We've had quite a few distillers (real, actual distillers) buy this already.

Re: Barnard - 1st edition for sale - shocking price!

Yes, that was a genuine 1st edition. It sold for €2,460 (about £2,140) which looked about right as it was quite worn on the spine and cover, the binding looked loose and generally it was in need of some restoration. (I hasten to add that I didn't buy it!) I would think that a good one, in a more w...

Royal Lochnagar take a few of our books and do quite well, in a modest way, with them. It's a shame more don't follow their example.
