Re: What is your most recent (whisky) purchase.

Yesterday, I went and visited this distillery:

While there, I picked up these bottles:

Later on in the day I found:

Re: Laphraoig 40 Year Old

If it's truly a Laphroaig official 40 yo bottling (hard green case with metal plaque on the front), DEFINITELY pick it up for that price. That's INSANELY cheap. I've owned one and we cracked it last year: Awesome whisky. I've never been super stoked on the 30yo (really good, but not exceptional), bu...

Re: A Connoisseur's Dream Event

I went last year as well and it was indeed excellent, especially considering that it was a very ambitious first year event. Awesome location, quite well organized and a fantastic exhibitor and pour list. Also, it wasn't too crowded - kind of felt like you had space to move around and hang out with t...

Re: What are you drinking now?

OMC Glenglassaugh 27yo (dist. Jan 1978, botl'd Nov 2005). Took me a good 1/3 of the bottle to really get into this whisky. My mistake was drinking it after I'd already had something else. This whisky is light and delicate and a lot of other whiskies will overpower it completely. But, now that I know...

Re: Throw a little Peat on the fire - January 2012

Well, all of this Caol Ila discussion meant that I had to participate! As a side note, i actually quite like the standard CI DE bottling - it's a little sweet, but it's what I would define as a super drinkable whisky. Certainly not the most complex out there, nor challenging, but easy going :) OK - ...

Oh - forgot that we finished off with Lagavulin 12yo CS, 2004 release. Good whisky, but unfortunately doesn't hold a candle to the 2009 version which I finished recently. the 2009 was excellent!

Had a few friends over tonight - a couple of them are heavy into the brewery scene professionally, so it was awesome to talk about beer, booze, bikes, etc... :) Anyway, more than a dozen bottles made it out tonight: OMC Glenglassaug 27yo 1978 50% ABV OMC Glenrothes 25yo 1975 50% ABV Dewar Rattray Ba...

Re: Uigeadail Vs. HP18

We drank both Talisker 18 and Oogie tonight (among a dozen other whiskies!), and both are excellent. I'm not the hugest HP fan, so of your original two choices, i would take the Oogie hands down. But Talisker 18 is absolutely awesome and might just be the best "generally available" whisky ...

Re: Best Peaty Islay for $100-$120

Although personally I'm not a fan of the Ardbeg Airigh Nam Beist (to each their own), I do think that there have been some excellent whiskies mentioned for sure. The PC series is really good, and Ganga nailed it with the Lagavulin 12yo cask strength which has been consistently been excellent. It was...

The weather is cooler with more rain which of course means it's getting back to serious whisky time. I know some will say that it's always the right time. However, I find my drinking slowing down a lot in the summer but picking back up in the fall. Last night's kill was a bottle of Laga 12yo, 2009 e...

OK thanks all, seems like the bottle is not spoiled or dangerous in any way, which was my primary fear and reason for posting. Re: Is a Good Blended Scotch worth trying?

Blends? Definitely! I think the stigma with blends comes with the insane marketing of blends like Johnny Walker Blue (when we all know that the gold is the best at 40% of the cost and the black very good for little $). Some blends can be really nice - hell. JW black is great and even regular Dewars ...

Re: Laphroaig Quarter Cask

A good suggestion that I have seen many times over the years is to go find a bottle of Lagavulin 16 year old whilsky: this is a LOT of people's introduction into Islay style whiskies and while super smoky, it doesn't have the medicinal components that Laphroaig whisky has. So, to me this means it's ...

Re: Significant jumps in quality: 12 yr to 18 yr

For "well known standard range" whiskies, two that immediately come to mind are: Macallan 18yo vs 12yo Talisker 18yo vs 12yo And - not quite the same, but I'll put down Old Pulteny 17yo vs 12yo as well - I'm not really a fan at all of the 12yo, but the 17yo is absolutely awesome. However, ...

Hey Ganga! This is one of my favourite distilleries for older bottlings - often super yummy with quite a bit of variation. I've had probably close to a dozen different family casks from the 1960s and 1970s and there is a pretty big range of taste between them. You should have seen what they poured a...
