Re: Has Lagavulin 16 yr slipped a couple of notches?

In 1997 Lagavulin greatly increased production volumes to try to meet a higher demand. So the new bottlings under the new higher volumes would be bottled during 2013. I've noticed a quality drop off recently, nothing like it used to be years back. It seems more smokey and less body, a thinner beast ...

Re: Japanese whiskey advice

At that price range your only looking at the entry level whiskies, and to be honest you'll be looking at about £50 for one of those. Your choices (if you want single malt) are: Yamazaki 12yo Hakushu 12yo Yoichi 10yo Miyagikyo 10yo These are produced by the 2 big players in Japan, the first 2 being b...

Re: Newbie Looking for Smoke

My experience with Benriach across their range has been sublime, the Curiositas isn't the best Benriach I've had (that's because everything I've had is outstanding) but it is smokey and a great one for smoke fans - I just prefer my Ardbeg if I'm peating it out. Be careful with the Lagavulins; the 12...

Re: Newbie Looking for Smoke

You could go for something like "Smokehead" whichi is an un-named distillery bottled by Ian Macleod. It's probably a young Lagavulin. You can get peated Speysiders too, Benriach do a range called Curiositas which uses heavily peated barley and is very good. both avaliable online from good ...

Re: Japanese whiskey advice

You need to not consider the "Older is more expensive, so older is better" view and take a view based on quality. Would you pay £80 for a 10 year old? Thousands (including me) did when Ardbeg just released Ardbog - and you know what; it blows away stuff older in the same price bracket. Jap...

Re: Rediscoveing Whisky (after Cognac/Rum)

Talisker 10 it's a consistenly good whisky and a lot of peoples "go-to's". Spicy dram, and coastal. So offers something different again for you to try.

From the others I also like the Dalwhinnie - a very good malt for the price. Crisp, floral and a touch of smoke. Lovely highland malt.

Re: Rediscoveing Whisky (after Cognac/Rum)

Normally wouldn't go straight in with this one, but as you like the Lagavulin..... ...grab a bottle of Ardbeg Uigeadail (£50 online) - 54.2%. It's big and peated. Personally for me Ardbeg Corryvreckan is more complex and better, but its £65 and a big higher in alcohol (57.1%). If you want to really ...

Re: What is your most recent (whisky) purchase.

It could be bottled at 55% and still not be "Cask Strength" :) Cask Strength has to be the abv is leaves the cask at. So Talisker 57 north is 57% abv, but it's still not a "Cask Strength" whisky....nearly, but not quite Quarter Casks are little tiny casks, whisky being put in her...

Re: Whisky recomendations for a present

Great choice, one of my top ever malts. 'Dark and Mysterious Place' indeed, does everything it says on the tin and is a real mystery of a malt. He'll not have ever had anything like it before (because there aint!) and will really knock his socks off flavour wise.

Re: Whisky recomendations for a present

You're not going to have a great range if you're after 'phroaig or Talisker for under £50, that's not normally avaliable - most stuff in that price range is in the supermarkets. Talisker have just released a No Age Statement called "Storm" thats around £45 but that'll find its way to the s...

Re: Help Identifying a Single Malt

The problem is that there are quite a many malts with a leather and smoke profile, and certainly what you had eaten will impact your ability to accurately identify some notes. Has the restaurant got a website with an online drinks list? If they have then take a look on there and post the list of whi...

Re: Help Identifying a Single Malt

15 Year Old Solera Reserve? Thats the only other one I can think they would have in the restaurant around a similar price point to the Macallan. It's got a bit of smokiness about it and its made using the Solera method (used in Brandy) so gives it a bit more character. Not personally a Glenfiddich m...

Re: Glendronach 12 : double casks or not ?

"traditional" oak barrels are ex-bourbon casks, sherry casks are sherry casks. Odd this, I thought that the current range of GlenDronach have the 12 year as a 43% made up of the 2 sherry cask types you have mentioned (PX and Olorosso). ...GlenDronach was mothballed back in 1996 and the cur...

Re: “Wood finished” vs. “Double Matured” vs. ???

.......I imagine “creative” secondary casks – maybe even dumping wood chips into the kegs themselves (a common practice in oaking beer.) You can't, it's illegal. Regulations are that the only thing allowed to be filled into a cask is spirit. No other aditives...so that means no wood. Didn't The Com...

Re: unique finish?

I think I've got it. Maybe they vat together malts of varying ages and then transfer the entire vatting to sherry casks for finishing. So say, 12, 14, 15 and 20 yr sprirts (aged in normal ex-bourbon casks) are all vatted together and then then resultant spirit is fully transfered to sherry casks whe...

Re: unique finish?

Not entirely sure. I know Aberlour do a "double cask" maturing process, certainly for their 16 yr old (which I find nice but nothing more, a little on the thin side incidentally). They claim to fully mature spirit in American Oak and Sherry Butts and then "marry" the finished art...
